After hearing just the intro to I'm A Believer way back in 1989 I was hooked. Once the rest of the band kicked in I was in rapture!
Dann Huff & Co. nailed it with this one. Last of The Runaways is what Melodic Rock is supposed to sound like and there is hardly an average tune on it.
I'M A BELIEVER and INNOCENT DAYS get it off to a flying start with massive hooks and massive solo's before things slow down a little with the moody CAN'T GET CLOSE ENOUGH.
I'LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS is one of 3 ballads on offer and was a semi-hit single for them. I don't care so much for the track nowadays but the solo is still brilliant.
The next 3 tracks NO WAY OUT, SHAKE ME UP and the second ballad IT TAKES TWO are my least favourite tracks, but in saying that, most bands of the time would have killed to have them in thier repoirte!
Things really get going again with the brilliant moody rocker STRANGER TO ME. It was not hooked upon first hearing it, but has grown to be a favourite over time. The brooding solo absolutely smokes!
HOLD BACK THE NIGHT and LOVE WELCOME HOME are the best two songs on offer. The first being a massive stadium rocker with a hook-laden chorus and the second is still one of my favourite ballads of all time! Still sends shivers down my spine when I hear the angst in Dann Huffs voice when the song nears completion!
The last track THE BIG PITCH is another party rocker and a great way to end the album.
A solid 9/10 from me.
One of the best Debut rock albums of all time, only bettered a year later in 1990 when TYKETTO released DON'T COME EASY (the best ever!)
P.S: If you enjoy this, you must listen to their equally impressive second effort TIME TO BURN.
