Product Description

What do you see in your dying moments…?

A young woman is on the run, her boyfriend found brutally slain in their bed. A simple crime of passion. Or is it?

Find out in the new heart-stopping thriller from the acclaimed author of LOST SOULS.

The Lancashire town of Blackley has been rocked by the violent death of Luke Howarth. The fingers of suspicion point towards his girlfriend, Sarah Goode - missing since his murder. Just another crime of passion with a tragic end.

Or is it? Reporter Jack Garrett isn't so sure - especially when he's asked by Sarah's distraught parents to find their daughter. Their description of caring schoolteacher Sarah doesn't tally with the media's portrayal of a cold-blooded killer.

But as he hunts for Sarah, Jack finds himself immersed in the town's troubled history and discovers that dangerous rituals from the past are impacting on the present.

Jack's girlfriend, DC Laura McGanity, in the midst of a tough custody battle, must be content to sit on the sidelines. But she soon finds herself caught up in the investigation, as the mystery surrounding Sarah's disappearance dramatically unravels.

Jack and Laura find themselves in mortal danger as they come face to face with an unhinged killer who is determined that they will pay with their lives…

By laineyf TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
'Last Rites' is excellent. It is set in Lancashire, and tells the story of Jack Garrett, a reporter, and his partner Laura, a police officer originally based in London. but who has moved to Lancashire with her son Bobby, to be with Jack. Laura is an ambitious Police Officer, who has taken a backward step career-wise in moving to Lancashire, and is embroiled in a custody battle with her ex, over her son. She and Jack are going through a very strained patch in their relationship, and things get worse when a local woman, Sarah, apparently murders her lover, and then runs away. Jack becomes involved with the case, and all is not as it seems. There is murder, mystery, witchcraft, legend, truth, fiction, and horror all contained within the book, and it draws on the legend of the Pendle Witches. I found it to be very gripping, entirely feasible, and thoroughly horrifying - in the fact that it is very realistic, and the plot was brilliant, I thought. A brilliantly good read, and highly recommended.

The Garrett/McGinity duo are in the thick of it once again, in another story of murder and general mayhem from the pen..or laptop..of this impressive new name in UK crime fiction. Once again, Neil White has woven a truly imaginative but highly credible storyline, set against the background of Pendle Hill and its factual history in witchcraft.
This is another book that is difficult to put down once you've started, and I read it in well under 48 hours. There are times when a strong stomach is needed to cope with the very graphic narrative, and I have to confess that I found the rather gory actions of the hero during the novel's final scenes to be slightly out of character and even somewhat gratuitous.
But this series just gets stronger and stronger as the author develops his main characters. This is number 3 out of the 5 published so far, and I feel sure that the series will go on and on for many years yet.
Don't even think about living in Blackley...it has more murders than Midsomer!

Hard to put down... 13 May 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
For me this was a brilliant read that I simply could not put down. I would highly recommend reading Fallen Idols and Lost Souls before reading this if you want to get the full effect of the story and a proper feeling for the main characters. The story moved along well. Some of the descriptions may not be for the faint hearted, but for me that added to the fear you felt for Sarah and the urgency to turn the next page and discover her fate. As with all of Mr White's novels, it left me wanting more, and I am looking forward to the next in the series out soon.

Gathering pace!
A little different from the first two in the series and a lot more gory, sometimes unnecessarily so. Read more

Not at all bad
A good mix of serial killers and witchcraft. My only concern is the rather vague ending. There were 3 people who should have been held accountable for their actions, but what... Read more

Hmmm . . .
I started this twice . . . but just couldn't make the next step 'into' the story. The description of some torture didn't help, I think, but I'm afraid that this book is not for me. Read more

Good, but not great
As many reviewers have already noted, this is a decent enough novel but it lacks the 'killer instinct' (if you'll pardon the pun) which would make me want to go and discover more... Read more

Good but nothing new
I don't know why, but I could not get into this story. It is well written and starts superbly. The detail in the descriptions is very detailed and the characters are many. Read more
