Yorkshire's answer to...er, well who cares? Just about the best there is I've found in this genre.
Pawson stands well on his own with a dozen individual and freshly plotted stories which are a pleasure to own and read again at any time, no matter if even just one chapter at a time. The author's own wry sense of humour permeates the narrative and the character of Charlie Priest shines as both a tenacious copper but a humanitarian, a captain deftly managing the helm of that good ship the Heckley nick, along with his cohorts Sparky, Maggie, Jeff, Nigel and Gilbert.
Financial adviser Hartley Goodrich is found dead in an armchair, the broken shards of a flower pot surrounding him. Obviously someone has hit him on the head. But was it murder? Once it transpires that shady dealing led to considerable financial losses for the majority of Goodrich's clients, there is no shortage of suspects for Charlie's team to interview.
Once again a great read. 5 stars and rising.

This was actually the first book I stumbled across in the Charlie Priest series. I enjoyed it enough to go on and read the others - I'm currently on my 5th with plans to read the others too. He is a likeable yet realistic detective, with some minor vices but not as tortured as some in the detective genre. It's a great read - recommended! As one review on the back cover says, it's great for staying in and reading on a wet winter day.

Stuart Pawson had a career as a mining engineer He followed this with a spell working for the probation service, before he became a full-time writer. He lives in the pleasant waterside village of Fairburn in Yorkshire. The author's writing is gritty and to the point, added to which he has a likeable sense of humour that he usually incorporates into his books, all of which I have found enjoyable.

Hartley Goodrich is a financial adviser, well to be absolutely correct a late financial adviser. An irritatingly safe and secure job, as jobs go, or so you would think. However when he is found dead in his armchair and right beside him is the flower pot that caused the fatal blow to his head there is no shortage of suspects. Why? Well when his affairs are looked into, it becomes apparent that his financial advice has cost some of his clients a great deal of money. In fact enough money to ensure that they are on a list of suspects, for his murder. Could it really be as simple as that?

I find the author's books consistently good and the character of the DI Charlie Priest is one of the more believable coppers on the crime fiction scene.
