A study of Irish traditional music, examining the music, the musicians and the love of the gig. Written by an Irish poet, it is a tribute to one of the liveliest folk musics in the world, from Tyrone fiddle techniques to the Belfast bars of yesteryear.

This book brilliantly depicts the passions and thoughts of any traditional artist. You don't have to be a musician, or a traditional Irish music fan, to get a lot from this book. It is semi-autobiographical and the writer is a well known traditional musician as well as an award winning poet.

With such experiences and skills, Carson clearly relates the thought-process that goes on in the head of any artist--but especially those who improvise music and play with words, and who have a wide range of connections through their art form.

The language is wonderfully written. I couldn't put the book down once I started it.

Poetry and Music 13 Feb 2010
This is a deceptive book, in a good way. You might expect a grizzled old muso's anecdotes of good times and bad behaviour, but Carson is a poet. The writing is seductive, dense with allusion and learning. Analytical as it is, It's also one of those rare books that makes you want to be part of what it talks about.
