4.0 out of 5 stars A Sunday afternoon classic, 10 April 2009
By

This review is from: The Last of the Mohicans [DVD] (DVD)
Coming from a period when BBC literary adaptations were - at least partially - getting out of the studios and shooting more on location, often on a moderately lavish scale, this rather enjoyable series was the kind of prestige production that used to be a key fixture of late Sunday afternoons on the channel but seems never to have been repeated. Given a decent enough budget for location filming in Scotland and even allowing part of a fort to be built there, the ample running time (nearly six hours) allows it to include many supporting characters and plot developments that have always been dispensed with in the big screen versions, and while it's not entirely faithful to James Fennimore Cooper's classic novel, it does have the room to take in more of his reflections, giving it a bit more depth than other adaptations.

Not that there aren't failings: the difference between the location filming in 16mm and the tape for the studio scenes is very noticeable, the French forces besieging Fort William Henry don't exactly fill the screen (there's a very sad shot of a single cannon in a field), the stuntwork often feels a bit polite and overly cautious and, unsurprisingly for the day, Mohicans and Hurons alike are played by white actors 'browned' up with coffee beans. Yet if you're willing to give it time and aren't expecting a lightning pace, it still works surprisingly well, and in Philip Madoc's vengeful Magua it offers one of 70s TV's best villains.

While Acorn's DVD includes all the original episodes in their 45-minute versions (the show was re-edited to 13 half-hour parts for the US), the original masters were destroyed by the BBC long ago, so the quality is acceptable but not as good as on many of the BBC's own remastered titles.

5.0 out of 5 stars The last of the Mohicans, 29 Dec 2010

I remember this TV series when it first went out on BBC. I was enthralled with it then and decided to buy the DVD when I saw it. I was not disappointed! My husband remembered it also and we watched it over 3 or 4 viewings. It still held up against more modern filming techniques and was very watchable. I had long forgotten the ending as I never did get round to actually reading the book, but once again I was heartbroken. Whatever happened to John Abineri and Richard Warwick? I think Kenneth Ives is still working in tv. Thank you Amazon for allowing me to relive one of my most enjoyable tv moments.

3.0 out of 5 stars A trip down memory lane ...., 5 Jan 2008
This review is from: The Last of the Mohicans [DVD] (DVD)
Having watched this as a child, I was delighted to find that it had been released on DVD. With eager anticipation, and fond memories of this television programme, I ordered it, and couldn't wait to watch it again. However, it turned out to be a rather disappointing experience, and probably a memory that was better left in the past.
The story vaguely resembled the original book, but not so you would notice. No use of native american actors in the lead red indian roles - but lots of fake tan. This is nothing like the more recent screen adaptation of this classic novel. It does however, portray more truly the love interest of Uncas and Cora - rather than Hawkeye and Cora - as in the recent screen adaptation - which is refreshing. Don't expect lots of realistic fight scenes/locations (think it was filmed in Scotland), but then it was probably filmed on a very low budget, and probably aimed at a rather more innocent audience, not yet into the flashy/violent television of the current day.
Very much for those wanting to revisit fond memories of watching Sunday night television in their youth.
