Clare Westbrook has fought hard for her success as a lawyer. Living in Phoenix with her lover, Detective Tony Sonterra, Clare is pregnant and content. She has even accepted Tony's marriage proposal and for a commitment phobe like Clare, that is a true testament of her love. So when Tony accepts a job as Chief of Police in the small town of Dry Creek, Clare reluctantly agrees to give up her practice and make the move too.
Dry Creek is a hotbed for criminal activity. A deadly illegal immigrant smuggling operation is connected to the small town and Tony is determined to eliminate it. Restless, Clare takes a job, much to Tony's chagrin, as an investigator for the D.A.'s office. Clare immediately begins investigating the disappearance of a child whose mother has been murdered.
With the smuggling ring, murders, and the abducted child, Clare is once again in the thick of danger. Tony, working hard to marry Clare as quickly as possible, is also doing everything in his power to protect her. With numerous attempts on her life, it is soon clear that Dry Creek is not safe for Clare or her unborn child.
One Last Look is my first Linda Lael Miller novel since her transition to romantic suspense. I was delighted and thoroughly entertained! The final book in this series, One Last Look works well as a stand alone novel. I enjoyed this crime-solving couple so much, I must now read Never Look Back and Don't Look Now.
The mystery and suspense of this book is very well-written and is the perfect complement to Clare and Tony's love story. I was especially pleased by Clare's strength of will and intelligence. That Tony supports and adores Clare despite the conflict of his desire to protect her and her desire to be in the thick of things, appealed to me immensely. With a lot of thrilling action, well-defined and interesting characters, delicious romance and a heart-warming happily ever after, One Last Look truly satisfies!
