...Secombe's new novel is clever, funny and very English -- The Guardian

Book Description

Across the aching wastes of space a terrible war is raging. The Gologons, long relegated to being the garbage disposers of the Galaxy, have finally rebelled, and now rampage across the universe, led by the pitiless Gulgus Filch. The only thing standing between them and universal domination is a small breakaway faction of the United Planets Federation. Meanwhile, in rural Devon, Sir Mortimer and Lady Trenchard are trying desperately to prevent their beloved, crumbling Hambledon Hall from falling into the hands of a City whizz-kid who plans to turn it into a weekend conference centre. If the Universe is to have any kind of hope, the UPF needs to find a safe place where they can gather and plan a counter-attack. And because of its handy location at the terminus of a wormhole (opening beside an azalea just beyond the ha-ha), Hambledon Hall is ideally situated to provide just such a haven …

Having read "Limbo" and enjoyed it hugely ( whilst, at the same time noticing the similarities to Pratchett etc.) I was intrigued to see what "The Last House.." would be like.Well, I loved it.I was also thrilled to see how Secombe's personal style and 'voice' had developed. This guy has his own world; his own quirky way of mixing plot and humour and is extremely clever at segueing between wonderfully corny slapstick and a delicate philosophical view of the world and how we treat each other. In the end this latter seems to me the most important aspect of his work.He manages to make you laugh ( and sometimes groan!); become totally wrapped up in the plot, and pull you up short and make you think all in the space of a few sentences. In other words, Andy Secombe is not just a good fantasy writer or a good s/f writer or a good comic writer - he is a good writer - and we can never have too many of those.

Read this book: you don't have to get out more, he'll get out there for you.

I have to confess that,as an actor I hope I get to play something in the inevitable movies of Andy Secombe's work - even if it's a rat!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Last House in the Galaxy 15 Sep 2005
Format:Paperback
Having taken nothing to read on holiday, I snatched my husband's copy of The Last House in the Galaxy (slightly concerned that sci-fi isn't usually my thing). Well I have to say, I was completely won over. I didn't stop laughing from beginning to end and got thoroughly involved in the story. I haven't had so much enjoyment from a book for ages and am thrilled to see there are two other Andy Secombe novels for me to catch up on. If lost for a book, and you want a good light read, give it a go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent as ever 2 Dec 2005
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've now read Limbo, Limbo II and The Last House in the Galaxy and my only problem with all of them is that I read them to fast cause I enjoy them so much and find Andy's style of writing to work well for me.

It's true what other's have said his books are not quite Hitchhiker, but he's certainly seems to be a fan of Douglas Adam style of weaving plots and humour in a sci-fi forum.

I'm sure I must get funny looks when I can't help but smile as I read a pun in the book.

I can't wait for Andy's next book.
