Book Description

1 April 1998
She needed to be tamed...She was a breathtaking firebrand, and Vere Mallory, the notorious Duke of Ainswood, had never seen anything quite like her. Although he thought he was rescuing Lydia Grenville from the clutches of a renowned wastrel, he quickly discovers she is angry at his interference! Amused by the sultry hellcat's fury, Mallory vows to teach her some humility - in life and in love. He was just the man to do it - Lydia Grenville was fuming. She was determined to save womankind from disreputable rakes like the infamous Mallory, to succumb to his scandalous charms. She finds herself overwhelmed by the scintillating sensations he brings to her body, but when she discovers that he has bragged that he's going to 'tame' her, Lydia vows to fight his advances...but nothing prepares her for the surrender she finds in his arms.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good mix of authentic history and sizzling passion 27 April 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Loretta Chase has done her homework very well. The reviewer who commented on the awful editing was missing Chase's references to Beowulf - Grendel is the (female) monster who makes the hero's life tricky - and the reference to Sarah Siddons was to the famous British actress of the 18th century. Can't fault those. But to the point - this was a non-stop, all-out romp, fun, witty and well-researched. It was my first Loretta Chase, but definitely not my last. If you like feisty heroines and mixed up heroes, this is one for you. It is sensual but the sex doesn't seem perfunctory and the best thing about it is the clear line that Chase develops to explain how a heroine who starts out loathing the hero can eventually end up with him. Nice work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! 17 April 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
It's a wonderful, wonderful book. I laughed. I cried (a bit). I grinned. *A lot*. I truly loved Grendell (Lydia) and Vere. In this book, they are truly equal. All secondary characters are wonderful too - particularly Jessica Trent's nice-but-dim-but-not-*that*-dim brother, Bertie.

The Last Hellion is definitely a 'No-way-would-I-lend-this-book-to-you-not-even-for-a-years-worth-of-chocolate-boxes' book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! 19 Feb 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
There are three authors that I will buy without even reading the synopsis: Linda Howard, Joan Wolf, and Loretta Chase. LC is a very recent addition to my list. Previous to 'The Last Hellion' I had only read two of her books...'Lord of Scoundrels' and 'Captives of the Night'. I loved them too, but I think I like this one even better. The heroine is smart and interesting. I really liked the way Vere (the hero) is confused and emotional (still strong and confident though) while the heroine is cool and logical. This is currently one of my 'desert island' books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good story, a little wordy 16 May 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This was my first book that I've read by Loretta Chase. That Last Hellion was the sequel to Lord of Scoundrels.

Twenty-eight year old Lydia Grenville was perfectly happy living her life as a journalist and trying to help the prositutes and women on the streets. Then one day she meets her match, the notorious Duke of Ainswood, the last hellion of the Mallory clan.

Although Lydia and Vere cannot control the attraction they have for eachother, both try to deny it. Vere shows up where Lydia is and ruins her plans for a story, he follows her around, tries to seduce her. When he finds he cannot seduce her he offers marriage. She refuses, but both their tempers get in the way when she agrees to a race, if she loses she must marry the duke. She doesn't lose, but the duke is hurt and Lydia realizes she cannot live without him and agrees to marry him. The two marry, still argue all the time, Lydia writes books and they realize they are in love.

This book was pretty good, but found it to be (although very funny at times) a little wordy and my attention span was lost a few times. If not for that, I may have rated it a little better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best romance writer 10 Mar 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Loretta Chase is one of the best romance writers I have ever read. And this story is simply wonderful. It's rich in historical detail and plot. But it is her characterizations that are so wonderful. These people jump off the page. They live and breathe. Ainswood met his match in Lydia, Lady Grendel is positively one of the best heroines in romantic fiction. If there is one thing wrong with Ms. Chase's books, it's that they end. I highly recommend this book...from Jane Harrison

4.0 out of 5 stars Great fun, Give us MORE!! 24 Aug 1998
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Loretta Chase has been one of my favorite authors for years. I love her characters and her plotting. Vere Mallory has a lot of excuse for his rotten behavior, but our heroine, Lydia Grenville, doesn't let him get away with avoiding his responsibilities. The chemistry between the characters and the repartee are both thoroughly enjoyable.

My only objection to this book comes from the history: I couldn't reconcile the hero with his cameo appearance in Lord of Scoundrels. Also, I must regretfully admit that I did not find it to be the equal of either Lord of Scoundrels or the short story The Mad Earl's Bride. Still, as a stand-alone story, it compares favorably with most historicals.

Loretta Chase has written another entertaining historical novel. The heroine is outstanding, and, for a change, wins more than her share of the encounters between the protagonists. A refreshing outcome!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting story with strong characters 10 Aug 1998
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I found the story to be very well-written and fast paced. For a change, it's nice to read not just about the parties of the ton, but also about some of the social problems of the time like prostitution, women's rights, etc. I thought that Loretta Chase did a great job of intertwining these elements with the love story. Also loved the character of Lydia - how refreshing to see a woman not in constant need of a man to protect her! The dialogue between them was snappy and funny - I found myself laughing out loud at their verbal sparring. Am now hoping that Lord Sellowby's story will be written next!

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific story by a great talent 25 Feb 1998
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
In 1828 London, The Duke of Ainswood, Lord Vere Mallory, is renowned as the "Last Mallory Hellion" for his role as the leader of the Corinthians. The group is dedicated to wine and women. Lydia Grenville is an independent woman, who anonymously earns a living by contributing to Argus Magazine. Her "Rose of Thebes" piece has been very well acclaimed and people want more from the unknown writer.

When Vere meets Lydia, the world of the Ton shakes. He decides to use all his considerable charm to seduce her, while she plans to use her sharp tongue and caustic pen to cut the big man down to size. However, neither one expected love to intercede between them. Though she offers him everything she is, can he finally accept the one thing that he has always rejected in order for both to obtain a lifetime of happiness?

Loretta Chase confirms why she is a two time winner of the RITA Award with her latest romance, THE LAST HELLION. The novel, the sequel to the wonderful LORD OF SCOUDNELS, is a very humorous and sensual Regency romance. The lead characters are a charming pair, but it is the witty story line that shows why most romance writers are chasing after this great talent.
