Product Description

Young Galen Waylock is the last watchman of the dream-gate beyond which ancient evils wait, hungry for the human world. For a thousand years, Galen's family stood guard, scorned by a world which dismissed the danger as myth. Now, the minions of Darkness stir in the deep, and the long, long watches over. Galen's patient loyalty seems vindicated. That loyalty is misplaced. The so-called Power of Light is hostile to modern ideas of human dignity and Darkness and Light, mankind is doomed either to a benevolent dictatorship or a malevolent one. And so Galen makes a third choice: the sleeping Champions of Light are left to sleep. Galen and his companions take the forbidden fairy-weapons themselves. Treason, murder, and disaster follow. The mortals must face the rising Darkness along.

Everness 18 Aug 2009
By Ian R
Format:Mass Market Paperback
A great little book spoiled somewhat by the fact that you need to go out and get part 2 to see what happens next. This is very different from the usual fantasy stuff, so may not be to everyone's taste - but well written.

This book, and the concluding 'Mists of Everness', follow several initially unrelated characters in the modern-day Eastern US as they battle to understand the true nature of the world and stop its demise at the hands of the Dark Angel Morningstar.

Wright has obviously researched his subject matter deeply, as like his 'Chaos' trilogy it contains characters from greek, roman, celtic and norse mythology, as well as borrowing intelligently from medieval angelology and A Midsummer Night's Dream.

The premise of a parallel 'dream world' is beautifully realised with some excellent descriptive prose, certainly not yet another dumb fantasy novel. My only minor gripe is the ending, which is a bit weak, especially when considered against the page-turning qualities of the rest of the book. Apart from that, loved every bit of it.

One of the few books I've read that where the world around me disappears completely (try China Mieville's Perdido Street Station for a similar feeling).
