Amazon.co.uk Review

The Last Gold Diggers is a witty, charmingly original and beautifully illustrated adventure story for 6 to 8-year-olds by Harry Horse, the well-known political cartoonist (The New Yorker, The Guardian) and author of several children's books including The Last Polar Bears and The Ogopogo - My Journey with the Lock Ness Monster (winner of the Scottish Arts Council Writer's Award).79-year-old Grandfather and Roo--an annoyingly stubborn and independently minded small dog--fly to Australia on a steam-powered plane in search of Grandfather's long-lost brother, Uncle Vincent. The Australia they land in turns out to be much crazier than they ever imagined possible. "Sidney" is not the jewel in the Australian Crown but a place with a rusty bridge and a corrugated iron shed where they are met by racoon-type creatures who run off with their bags. And that's just the first of a series of wildly eccentric and funny adventures before they finally strike lucky and find, not just dear old Uncle Vincent, but a barn full of gold as well--down a rabbit hole, of course. --Tamsin Palmer

Product Description

In this sequel to "The Last Polar Bears", Grandfather and his demanding, but delightful, dog Roo journey to Australia in search of Uncle Vincent, last heard of prospecting for gold. Their adventures are told in letters sent back to Grandfather's grandchild.

The Last Gold Diggers is a great adventurous book because it has lots of letters in it. It's the most brilliant book I have ever read. I'd actually give it 5 crowns out of 5.

The illustrations add so much more to this altogether charming story 21 Aug 2011
By Deborah Sandford - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
One of the most endearing books I have ever read! Written purposely in a somewhat old-fashioned jargon ("Being as it were, an account of a small dog's adventures, down under), the story unfolds in letters and journal entries written from a grandfather to his grandchild, as he embarks with his companion dog, Roo. The salutations and signatures are in script, personalizing the text, which font is large and clear. The most charming and detailed illustrations are scattered and plentiful throughout. This fast-paced story of Grandfather and Roo traipsing all around Australia seeking Uncle Vincent, who purportedly went gold mining decades before, is jam-packed with silly and eccentric adventures that will have kids and adults giggling from one scenario to another. It's rather like Winnie-the-Pooh for a sophisticated audience.

Delicious Story 14 Dec 2006
By Victoria Bloxom - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
After buying The Last Castaways while in London a year prior, I fell madly in love with the adventures of Grandfather and Roo. I had to have more, so the next trip, I bought all the rest of the series. They can be read in any order. Each tale stands alone. They are funny, warm-hearted and clever. Your children will love each one.
