Product Description

Product Description

In 1940, against the backdrop of the Battle of Britain, 66 Quadron's commanding officer, Squadron Leader Athol Forbes, asked ten of his pilots to record their experiences of flying one of the greatest aerial battles ever waged. "The Ten Fighter Boys", published in 1942, comprised the first-hand accounts of pilot officers and sergeant pilots from all walks of life among them was Sergeant Jimmy Corbin, who wrote the third chapter. He was 23 - old by pilot standards - and, like the rest of the squadron, based at Biggin Hill, Kent. Now, sixty years later, Flight Lieutenant Jimmy Corbin, Spitfire pilot, tells his extraordinary wartime story. He describes how an ordinary working-class boy from Maidstone was propelled into the thick of action in the skies over Kent during the summer and autumn of 1940. As the sole survivor of the original 'Ten Fighter Boys', Jimmy's story is all the more poignant now that the men who fought the Battle of Britain pass from living memory.

The title refers to an earleir book , published during WW2, in which the author contributed a chapter. It is worth reading the original book "Ten Fighter Boys" before undertaking this one. Jimmy Corbin is the last man living of the orginal 10 and this is his life story. Jimmy described himself as an ordinary person. In one sense he is correct in so much as the book starts with his childhood, the son of a plumber and the reader goes on to discover how he became a teacher, fighter pilot and back to teaching after the war. The meat of this book is of course WW2. The well written and understated prose takes us throught the life of a Spitfire pilot the way it was, all the fears, tensions and drama without any bombast or false brovardo. Jimmy Corbin ended the war as a Flight Lt with a DFC. Jimmy may have been an "ordinary person" however he overcame all his fears and became a figher pilot. Ovecoming fear and still "doing your bit" this is mark of a real hero.

Having read the original book 'ten fighter boys', I was pleasantly suprised to actually meet Jimmy at the book signing for his new work. In the original the station commander wrote a piece about his boys and Jimmy Was always being ragged about his likeness to George Formby. Heaven forbid calling him George as he became very narked.
It was a fitting read to hear how Jimmy's life panned out as he returned to a life in Maidstone, Kent.
He, as so many others, have a story to tell and it is worth every penny to read and digest these real heroes lives.
I read this book last year but as I have just finished Henry Allingham's book and also read Harry Patch's book a few months ago I decided to reread this one.
Thats a fine trio of men with a fine trio of books, 5 stars to them all.

Fascinating insight 6 July 2007
Format:Hardcover
With the 70th anniversary of the great battle for the skies only a few years away this book gives one a window to what was actually going through the minds of those involved - something a history book can and will never achieve. Easy to get into - less easy put down; I thoroughly recommend it.
