You often see releases by recording artists branded as "The Very Best Of....". This could very well have been used to describe the 2013 publication by Gavin Morrison covering his pictorial journey through the final 10 years (1959-1968) of steam traction on British Railways.

The superb photography is entirely in colour which is unusual for the period. However, what makes this presentation all the more remarkable is the text that accompanies each image.

As expected from this renowned authority, the details of dates taken, the locations and locomotive facts are provided in full.

But, for me, the endearing features are the personal recollections by the photographer himself. He relives every image bringing the reader a timeless encounter with the steam workings on British Railways while providing his own personal perspective as he took each shot.

He begins each chapter with a list of the yearly closures of under-performing and unprofitable lines that fell to economic realities, while nationally thousands of steam locomotives were being withdrawn and replaced by far fewer numbers of diesel and electric traction.

I own many publications featuring the photography of Gavin Morrison and, having grown up in West Yorkshire, I can relate to many of the locations he depicts. Yet as the reader will see, he covered all parts of the British Railways map leaving no region ignored.

This is not a compilation of random photographers. This is all his own work, taken in all kinds of weather. Dedication you cannot ignore with excellence you can only admire.

Absolutely recommended reading and, in my opinion, I can rate this publication as being the very best of Gavin Morrison.

I loved this book. The quality of the photo's are 100%, the text is correct and just to be able to wallow in my youth and chasing steam engines £30 is well worth it. Cheaper with Amazon of course!!!

A quality publication that brought back many memories of the steam age. The book is predominantly north country and Scotland which reflects where the author had lived, a point he makes. There are enough photographs of southern England and Wales to satisfy most readers. This is the sort of book to pick up and browse on numerous occasions. A bargain price at Amazon.

I'm an ex fireman who worked at Camden Depot in the 1960's. This is one of the best railway books I've ever owned. The photos really are top quality.
