3.0 out of 5 stars Not his masters voice 5 Nov 2012
I have obtained 3 different versions of this film, all advertising that the film is spoken in english, I purchased one from America, Germany, and the one here advertised, NONE of them have the original dubbed soundtrack that accompanied the film on it's 1974 cinema distribution. ''Le Manni Sulla Citta'' another great Italian film Steiger made for Francesco Rosi in 1963 had Steiger's voiced dubbed in Italian from it's release, what is really galling is that this film was released with all the dialogue in English, obviously the ensemble Italian roles were dubbed, but Steiger retained his own voice in the cinema print, and on the original VHS tape which I still own. This is especially frustrating when given this is one of Steiger's few remaing great portrayals from the 70's, an inward looking, smouldering portrait of a once proud leader in freefall, it is so much more subtle and convincing a portrayal of Il Duce than Steiger's turn in ''Lion Of The Desert'' where Mussolini comes over as a strutting clown, and fell victim to Steiger's later tendency to overact. A major dissapointment, as the section of the film involving American soldiers is still spoken in English! What is going on ? Hopefully someday an english spoken version of this fine film will be made available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trying to Escape Fate! 15 Jun 2007
By Maximiliano F Yofre - Published on
Director Carlo Lizzani is a veteran Italian film maker formed in the Italian "Neorealist" film school; this influence is still perceptible in the present movie.
Lizzani in his extended career has delivered some very good films as "Chronache di Poveri Amanti" ("Chronicle of Poor Lovers" 1954) and "Il Procceso de Verona" (The Verona Trial 1963) amongst other.

"Mussolini: Ultimo Atto" (Mussolini: Last Act 1974) show dictator's four last days of life. The film shows Mussolini as he was: arrogant, selfish, histrionic, liar, opportunist, unremorseful, irresponsible ... yet human.
Around him a plethora of flunky officers strive to attract his favors. His faithful lover, Claretta Petacci, still clings to "the big man" with desperate love.
Germans, Allies, Partisans, Vatican and Neutrals compose an intricate political and diplomatic ballet around this sinking figure.

Photography in charge of veteran Roberto Gerardi and music score composed by Ennio Morricone are excellent.
Rod Steiger is outstanding in his characterization of the Italian dictator, his attitudes and corporal demeanor is exact; yet the best of his playacting is the way in which he conveys to the audience the internal turmoil of Mussolini.
Lisa Gastoni as Claretta, Henry Fonda as Cardinale Schuster and Franco Nero as Colonel Valerio offer great performances too.

A very good historical film that will be thoroughly enjoyed by history fans and general public too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good movie about a turning point of history 4 Nov 2009

Rod Steiger gives a real performance. Production quite old but overall faithful to historical facts. Highly recommended for those interested in Italy's demise but also entertaining for anybody who wants to spend a good time watching good acting. Makes Mussolini a more humane and tormented being who is unable to scape what he is convinced is his destiny.

I liked it for the unique feature that it focuses on only the last several days of his life where all the options he thought he would rely on fail him one after the other right down to the Nazis who give him up. What I did not like was, the spoken audio was in Italian and I had to read English subtitles for the whole movie, but even there that gave the movie a show of authenticity.

3.0 out of 5 stars Last Days Of Mussolini 24 Oct 2012

Despite the Italian producer's well produced and very factually presented film, he deserves chastisement for its disappointing ending.

The climax to Mussolini and his mistress' demise was the local Italians hanging their corpses by the ankles in the village square so they could be reviled and spat on for the misery Mussolini caused an Italian nation that never wanted war, including the many murdered on his orders.

This is shown in all documentaries and should have been included in the film. I am very disappointed and shall give the film away to anyone.
