4.0 out of 5 stars aw, stop picking on him..., 2 April 2007

This review is from: Last Days [DVD] (DVD)
As many of the reviews here have stated, not a great deal happens in 'Last Days'. For fans of fast paced, action-led movies, you'd have more excitment in a coma, and if you're hoping for a big climactic ending involving a shotgun and Courtney Love, you'll also be disapointed. Whilst much has been made of the similarities between the movie's protaganist and the great Nirvana frontman, and they are many, the viewer should think of Cobain as being the inspiration behind the camera, not represented in front of it.

Many of the reviewers who awarded 'Last Days' with just a single star said that they spent the entire movie waiting for something to happen - I wonder, during this moment of anticipation did they once look up at the screen and notice the wonderful protrait of a man's isolation taking place infront of them? Whilst the Hollywood blockbusters we all enjoy munching our popcorn to are likened to rollercoasters, 'Last Days' is more like a gentle stroll by the canal. It's a slow burner, sensitively played and wonderfully shot. The overall tone of the film is melancholic to say the least however some of Blake's more surreal behaviour (two words: rifle and dress) punctuates the film with moments of stark comedy.

Perhaps this film isn't for everybody and I respect all the other reviews that have been posted, but please don't be put off by them. I'm not going to proclaim it a masterpiece like many of the critics (what consititutes a masterpiece anyway?) but I do think it's a wonderful film that deserves to be given a chance. 'Last Days' is a movie to loose youself in, to be hypnotised by; like drowning in a sea of tranquility (but drowning in a good way, obviously). And to all those people who spent the entire movie 'waiting' - the world won't stand still for you, wait too long for something to happen and life will pass you by. Enjoy the moment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, but I hated it, 30 Jan 2006
This review is from: Last Days [DVD] (DVD)
I'm sorry to write such a negative review - normally I wouldn't bother but I disliked this film so much that I don't want others to suffer the same fate. Like chameleon244 I can't understand why anyone would like this film but looking at the other reviews I guess some people do. So feel free to ignore this review - it's only my personal taste after all - but don't say you haven't been warned!

I guess the nicest thing I can say about Last Days is that it has atmosphere. Bags of melancholy, paint-peeling, slow-moving atmosphere. Oh, and Michal Pitt looks a bit like Kurt Cobain. Unfortunately for me this didn't make up for the complete lack of plot, dialogue or character development. I'm afraid I found it terribly, terribly dull. And oh, so slo-o-o-o-o-w. Viewers will gain absolutely no insight into Kurt Cobain's last days other than that he was in a bit of a mess.

I will cheerfully admit that I could have missed the point and this kind of film is simply not to my taste. However, the bottom line is that if someone held a gun to my head and tried to make me watch this again I would take the bullet (which is what I wanted to do pretty much throughout watching it anyway).

At least I will now have no hesitation when someone asks me to name my worst film of all time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Did not like this, 6 Oct 2008

Self indulgent film - though not quite sure who was being self indulged here. Certainly not the viewer. Maybe that's the point, but I am afraid I found it a waste of money and time. Very disappointing. I persevered, watched it to the end, but remained bored and did not care about was going on (or not going on more to the point) Not for me!
