Product Description

If you like The Artist you’ll love Daisy Waugh’s Last Dance with Valentino.

One night. One dance. One love to last a lifetime.

1916. Leaving war-ravaged London, Jenny Doyle sets sail for New York where she is to work for the de Saulles family. Their home, Gatsby-like in elegance, is rife with intrigue and madness. Only Jenny’s friendship with dancer Rodolfo offers escape… until, one tragic day, the household is changed forever.

1926. America booms, prohibition rules and Rodolfo has taken his place on the silver screen as Rudolph Valentino. Will the world’s most desired film star and his lost love have their Hollywood happy ending, or will the tragic echoes from their time with the de Saulles thwart them one last time?

By S Riaz TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is a very enjoyable read about Jennifer Doyle, who accompanies her artist father to the USA during the first world war. Arriving in America, her unreliable father suddenly informs her that she is to work as an companion to the wife of his new employer Mr de Saulles and, so, her new life begins. At the de Saulles house, Jenny meets the Italian immigrant, professional dancer, Rudolfo Guglielmi and falls in love. However, things conspire against them and Jenny ends up having many exciting adventures as she follows him to Hollywood. As she pursues her dream of becoming a screen writer, she is constantly trying to find her old lover, who has now become the screen legend, and first male sex symbol, Rudolph Valentino. In a way, the story is really about the constant search both of them have, each for the other, until finally they are reunited. The story is told through flashbacks, as Valentino lies in hospital. It is a shame Valentino had such a small role in the story overall, although his presence is felt throughout the story. I thought the early part of the book, set in New York and featuring the de Saulle's scandal, was the most realistic and enjoyable, but the book was a great read overall and the scenes set in early Hollywood were interesting to read about.

An enjoyable read 10 Oct 2011
By EssexReader VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This was a very enjoyable read and whilst its not an era that I'm familiar with, I had heard of some of the characters like Mary Pickford and Clara Bow and obviously Valentino, although fiction has been merged with fact it made for very interesting reading. The characterisations and the description of 20th century New York were very well written and you imagine and feel the glamour of those times. The story of the de Saulles could warrant a book on its own. I did find the time shifts in this book quite confusing however, I'm normally quite happy with dual time frames but this didn't seem to work as well and after coming to the end, I had to go back to the beginning and re-read that part for it to make some sense. The narrator, Jennifer/Lola had a self destructive personality and there were times when I wanted to shake her because she seemed to be sabotaging her own chance of happiness. I didn't feel that Valentino featured as much as I would have expected and I would have liked for there to have been more background information to tie him in to the story. Nonetheless, a recommended read.

The story is lovely and the fact that its loosely based on factual events even more so. Loved the Hollywood glamour and thought it was a very realistic account of what it must of been like in those days.
Read it for something different - and also a love story thrown in with some twists along the way. Thorougly enjoyable.

Amazing
Beautifully written, full of suspense, insight and still very honest. I've demanded that all my friends read it. A glimpse into history with a great story too. Titanic.

Boring and predictable
I read this book on holiday and hated it.

The plot is dull and dreadfully predictable though I imagine the author thinks it terribly inventive. Read more
