4.0 out of 5 stars A case of plagiarism., 28 Dec 2002

(HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)    (TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Last Dance (87th Precinct) (Paperback)
The premise on which this crime novel is based is stated by one of the investigating officers. "When a stage musical is likely to make millions, there's always somebody who makes a claim of plagiarism." So Carella and his 87th Precinct fellow officers investigate several crimes here, and work their way through a large list of suspects whose motivation might be linked to the forthcoming production of a stage musical.

You'll find the usual McBain mix here: vivid description, tight dialogue, frequent changes of location. You'll never find a dull sentence, or a lifeless piece of dialogue. It was published in the year 2000. If the drama sags slightly and the imaginative force is not as strong as the punch that hits you in some of the earlier McBain crime novels, bear in mind that this is the fiftieth time McBain has worked with this highly successful formula.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vintage McBain, 7 Nov 2001
By

This is Ed McBain at his 87th Precinct best. It reads with the freshness of his early novels, but by allowing the core characters to age gracefully you can be forgiven for forgetting that this series was started nearly 50 years ago. The plot has the usual twists and turns, and the sub-story of the lives of Carella, Meyer, Brown et al, brings a realism often missing from long-running series. Whether you are a confirmed McBain fan (like me) or reading this as your first foray into the 87th Precinct, you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great police yarn from the Master, 5 Aug 2000
This review is from: The Last Dance (87th Precinct) (Paperback)
For over forty years, Ed McBain has been the Master of the the 'police procedural' crime novel; the heroes of his '87th Precinct' novels, the hard-working detectives of a major U.S. city (clearly based on New York), catch the bad guys by following clues and assembling evidence through the application of hard work and police science. In 'The Last Dance', the well-loved regular characters investigate an apparent suicide that turns out to be a murder; and with more to it than meets the eye.

McBain's two greatest strenghts are the absorbing readability of his work, and his gift for producing dialogue in his books which is actually like real-life conversations. They are both found in this, his most recent novel of the 87th Precinct.
