3.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended for children, 13 Mar 2009

It's a relevant and good book. It also traumatised me as a child - and while I was a sensitive child, I also read Brother in the Land and Z for Zachariah without any problems. Do beware buying this for children!

5.0 out of 5 stars Last Children of Schewenborn, 18 Sep 2006
I read this book (in Swedish) as a young teenager in the late 80s. It is still a very relevant book, describing the lives of a group of children (siblings I think) after some kind of horrible nuclear disaster in Europe. The great majority of the population have died or are dying and the kids find themselves struggling for survival in a post-apolcalyptic society. The book is not as dark as it could be. It is unclear whether a nuclear war or just some kind of accident brought about the situation. I suppose the nuclear apocalypse scenario was more relevant during the cold war than now, but nuclear weapons and nuclear power are still around and still dangerous. Gudrun Pausevang is an excellent German writer with plenty of German-centric stories to tell. Highly recommended reading for an inquisitive child - guaranteed to make them think. The book is actually a bit scary though, and may need to be put in context by an adult.
