This is a short story in the American Noir style that has its moments of fear and pathos. A sex worker is getting ready to venture out onto the streets despite reports that a serial killer is using prostitutes as his victims. A bartender tries to persuade her to go out on a date with him instead. I read it as another interesting take on the indifference of most people towards sex workers and the questionable sense of fatalism that often accompanies reports of their deaths.

NIcely done, gritty slice of life in the big city 31 Jan 2012

This is a short story and it takes place in a bar during a heat wave. You have the customers and the barkeep and as the tale unfolds we discover that despite the heat, they still have their individual hopes and dreams and plans despite being stuck in a rut.

Oh, and then there is a "B" story that concerns a serial killer stalking the innocent women that work the streets,

It's pretty short- about 20 pages - but Cox keeps you engaged in the story and like all good stories, you leave the bar at the end of the tale wanting more ( in a good way.)
