Review

Who says you have to actually live in Eastern Europe to play Eastern European sounds? Not Forty Thieves Orkestar, a UK-based conglomeration of Balkan-beats and Apple Mac loving musos whose vibrant live shows have become a talked-about highlight of festivals such as Glastonbury and Bestival. Having started life as a studio project in 2004 these rabble-rousers have developed a sound that s both in-your-face generic (think an electrified Taraf de Haidouks, who they happened to support on a UK tour) but with enough of the urban British street to grant them a singular edge. Their influences are predictably wide-ranging, spanning everything from klezmer, Gypsy stylings and bellydance tracks to dub reggae, hip-hop and cinematic soundscapes. Their USP, however, is probably their savvy knack of throwing rootsy samples and ambient atmospherics into Eastern Europe s classic, carnivalesque sound. Balkan music is eminently remixable, of course, as exemplified by DJ Shantel and one-off projects such as Electric Gypsyland. But Forty Thieves programmer and mixer Aidan Love has a way with studio trickery that gives the band an edge: instrumental opener Giza Stomp has the requisite snaky clarinet and klezmerish violin but is lent contemporary wallop by some clever special effects. Angela Ward s vocals are given polyphonic treatment on Dervish Tanz , where the clarinets of Idris Rahman and Arun Ghosh weave and skid through galloping, thudding beats; the compelling Uskadar ebbs and flows with jazz-flavoured flair, leading a dance that begins in a capital city by the Thames and continues into the Balkans and beyond. 5.0 out of 5 stars Tunes to fall in love with!, 12 Feb 2012

This album swings my skirt, skips my heart, lifts my chest and makes me light as a feather. These tunes lift you and take you to Bosphorus, the blue line of sea in Istanbul- then you feel the salt on eyelashes, you feel the wind in the hair and fresh air hugging you with songs that makes you want to go and find your dreams in unlikely places. These tunes are brave, they are groovy, they are cool and they bring you another world that is familiar yet far away. Tunes to live by!

5.0 out of 5 stars compelling anglo-balkan groove, 26 Dec 2011
This review is from: Last Band Standing - Forty Thieves Orkestar (Audio CD)
I first heard/saw the 40 thieves when they were backing a UK tour by Taraf de Haidoucks about 5 years ago. I was impressed by the Thieves' energy and original take (with fx) on Balkan beats. Now there is another album - I think only the second since then - that captures this energy and creativity. Maybe there have been enough Balkan Beats and Bangers for a while, but this band have something new and compelling to offer - a good-time dance version. Not exactly authentic (what's that?) but hugely entertaining.
