5.0 out of 5 stars and up and spake the niest o' them..., 15 July 2010
This review is from: The Lasses Fashion/Jock Tamson's Bairns (Audio CD)
Along with Ossian, JTB are the pick of Scottish 'revival' folk bands, the nearest thing in their neck of the woods to the Bothy Band. They deal in neither the adrenaline-fuelled dance sets that are the BB's trademark, nor the sweeping harp airs that Ossian do so beautifully. Where they win out is on the songs: warm, mellow, reflective, tinged with sadness. Of course they have Rod Paterson, surely the greatest Scots traditional singer of his generation.

One of these albums has been a favourite for many years, and is a true masterpiece of the genre. The other is new to me; I don't feel it is quite of the same quality, but it's still streets ahead of most. The order of the two has been swapped around her;, apparently for no better reason than that Richard Thompson likes The Lasses Fashion, and therefore it should have top billing. Well, I suppose small record companies need all the publicity they can get.

Of course, putting the two together on one disc means you lose a track or two. The second album (ie the first) has had the last track, Sae Will We Yet, shaved off; it now ends a bit anti-climactically with a march.

I've no idea why this page lists the MacNaughton Pipe Band as co-artist; there are pipe-tunes on these albums, but absolutely no pipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars folk genius, 1 May 2001

It's not hard to see why Richard Thomson chose The Lassies Fashion alongside Elvis as one of his top ten albums of all time. These two albums could not be any better, the songs are sung to perfection and the jazz/folk influenced accompaniment is stunning. Also the value for money that this c.d offers is incredible. Buy this now and tell all your friends, the JTB's should be huge.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very fine collection of tunes and songs, 31 Oct 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Lasses Fashion/Jock Tamson's Bairns (Audio CD)
This is one of my favorite celtic cds. I must disagree with Richard Thompson (see album sleeve) and anyone else who states that the second cd is the better of the two. I do like much of the second cd, and it has some tremendous offerings, especially the songs 'Tibbie Fowler' and 'Lady Keith's Lament'. Unfortunately, the bairns introduced a swingy, jazzy feel to many of the instrumentals that make them very difficult for me to listen to.

The first cd is all gold, however. Every cut is a glistening example of what a traditional celtic cd should be...traditional celtic. No 'ground-breaking' here, folks; just wonderful, intricately performed music the way it is meant to be played. Can you tell I'm a traditionalist?

If you like this music, you might do well to check out the Tannahill Weavers, Ossian and the Old Blind Dogs. If you especially like the songs, check out the McCalmans and the Corries. Happy listening!

5.0 out of 5 stars Who says the Scots are mean ???, 8 Sep 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Lasses Fashion/Jock Tamson's Bairns (Audio CD)
The compilation of Jock Tamson's two albums on to one brilliant CD is amazing value. The music reeks of Scottish traditional sounds and yet it is exciting, new and inventive. The two fiddlers play some lovely shetland style tunes accompanied by guitar, whistle, mandolin, concertina and bodhran. Great rhythms and a "live" feel to the recording. Sounds like they're having fun. The songs are excellent, Tony Cuffe and Rod Patterson have very contrasting vocal styles, equally effective and great choice of material, highlights being "Lady Keith's Lament", "Hieland Soldier" and "Clarke Saunders". Much as I like Capercaillie's blend of celtic folk rock, Jock Tamson's Bairns are a more authentic Scottish band and, for me anyway, more consistently enjoyable. If you buy only one Scottish CD - THIS IS THE ONE !

If you like Scotland and you also like their folk music you will love this CD. By the way, don't expect to understand all the words in every song ;)
