Product Description

Description

Bolstered by his band the Sussex Wit, Johnny Flynn shows there's still plenty of life left in British folk-rock on his debut album, A LARUM. A lo-fi production aesthetic and a tendency toward traditional-sounding folk and blues flavors (fiddles, banjos, and acoustic guitars abound) prove to be a perfect match with Flynn's poetic-but-unpretentious lyrics andpunk-meets-folk edge. A LARUM presents a powerful new singer/songwriter's voice to the world at large.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 29 May 2008
By C. Wyer (Hobbiton, The Shire, GB) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
An amazing album, with a great array of songs - it flows brilliantly and could quite possibly be the most perfect album of the year.
The single versions of some original songs have been brilliantly reworked, and every track is as fresh and well-written as the next. Lyrically, as one would expect from Flynn, the words are thought provoking and interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Nick Drake..., 22 Jul 2008
... never thought I'd write those words in the same sentence, but Flynn transcends all others in this genre - not least with the grim humour of his lyrics. There ARE similarities with Drake, the unusually acceptable Englishness of it all (and some of the chord structures), but this is an indispensable three lp's worth of great songs.

So, a great epitaph to a dead (pop) culture. Will the last person out of the UK please turn out the lights and make sure this wonderful talent comes with you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Why change your best songs?, 28 May 2008
By Mr. S. Galloway "stuartgalloway85" (WGC, Herts) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I don't understand why artists do this - they write such beautiful songs like 'The Box', 'Eyeless in Holloway' and 'Tickle Me Pink' and then go and ruin them when they put them on the album. He sings them differently, and made them complex. I don't know, maybe he's trying to make them more appealing and mainstream? If so, shame on your Mr Flynn.

Please note - The versions of 'The Box', 'Tickle Me Pink', 'Eyeless in Holloway' and 'Cold Bread' are different to the single versions and versions on the earlier released EP.
