Product Description

In 1964 Dave Godin was captivated by Bessie Banks´original recording of `Go Now' and was incensed by the Moody Blues´usurping of the song and what he considered an unduly hasty campaign by the British record company to pass their version off as the original and best. To make amends on behalf of the small but eager coterie of UK soul fans, he took a special interest in Bessie and her husband Larry, the composer of the song.

Further delvings into the pair's releases lead to more revelatory record finds and soon Dave was to champion Larry´s releases on Select, Kapp and Spring and his composing and production work with artists such as the Exciters, Kenny Carter and the Geminis. Dave built up a strong friendship with the family and a bank of information on their work. His discovery of Jaibi´s (Larry´s second wife) `Ýou Got Me' on Kapp Records was a personal Deep Soul revelation and he awarded the recording the prestigious last track placing on his first Deep Soul Treasures CD.

The family were well represented throughout all the volumes of Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures but their work wasn't restricted to deep soul and he planned a CD project to showcase their other talents. Sadly he became terminally ill but before he died he asked Ace/Kent consultant Ady Croasdell to complete the project. Fortunately Ace has bought many Banks family recordings from GWP Productions (for whom Larry worked in the late 60s). Some prime previously unheard soul songs have emerged from this source and feature here. Other vital and important tracks have been licensed-in from RCA and other smaller labels and Ady has built on Dave's research with extensive interviews.

Apart from deep soul classics there are examples of Larry Banks' northern soul genius in tracks such as `What's One More Lie' by Milton Bennett (co-composer of `Go Now'), the Geminis' storming `He Moves Me', the Devonnes' `Doing The Gittin' Up', and unknown group the Shaladons' classy take on `We Can Do It'.

Of the deep soul tracks the highlights include two previously unissued Kenny Carter beat ballads and his excellent rendition of `Lights Out' plus Jaibi's original intense demo of `You Got Me'.

This CD is part of the occasional Artistry In Soul series.

3.0 out of 5 stars What needs to be said 12 Jun 2013
By Richard
Format:Audio CD
Apparantly the founder of the Tamla Motown Society had enough clout to persuade Pye Records to issue the original version of the Moody Blues hit Go Now and it came out as a Red Bird single.A song incidentally which would have died the same death as all the other stuff here if the Moody Blues had not gone on a promotion tour to the States and been in the right place at the right time,in this case a radio station who'd been sent a copy and promptly thrown it in the trash
Then it was handed to the group who were looking for ideas for their 3rd single. No big deal
Thus the Moody Blues became part of the British Invasion and did something the Banks family could never even have dreamed about-topping the U S charts with a total flop single the same way the Searchers had.It had now got to that stage of the Invasion that British covers were outselling the U S originals but the Moody Blues rarely if ever did covers by the time the Moody Blues Mark 2 began save for a Christmas album
The song went into a life of its own after Denny Laine the voice of the band teamed up with Paul McCartney to co found Wings where some sources have claimed Laine wrote the song!
Dave Godin was one of those names who put me right off as I'm not into Deep Soul.He once had a shop in London where I met him with another guy.
I've just given this the middle rating as I've never heard it or even want to do but I would imagine Larry Banks is a clever enough guy to have stuck out with music which is uncommercial.
I'm also pretty annoyed that the greatest ever black girl singer-Jan Bradley-is forver cast aside in favour of other who have nowhere near her talent. In other words there is still no Jan Bradley CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep Soul gems for fans of Dave Godin's series 11 Jan 2013
By Donald E. Gilliland - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Fans of Dave Godin's "Deep Soul Treasures" series of soul compilations will definitely enjoy this one. Godin, in fact, was a longtime fan of Larry Banks and the records that he wrote and produced. One of the most famous of those songs was the original version of "Go Now" that Larry wrote, and which was recorded by his wife Bessie Banks. Later, of course, the Moody Blues had a huge hit with the song, but few people have heard the original, which is the first track on this mind-blowing compilation. Both Bessie and Larry have a handful of other songs on here (Larry was also a good singer), but many of the other "no name" artists are also very impressive; singers such as Kenny Carter, Jaibi (another Dave Godin favorite), Milton Bennett, and vocal groups such as The Dynamics (NOT the Dynamic Superiors), The Pleasures, The Exciters, and more. But the most impressive aspect of this album: Larry Banks wrote --- or co-write --- every single song on here. 24 fine soul tunes that should be heard by more people. This CD also includes a thick booklet with copious details about each artist, vintage photos, plus track times and song credits. It's sad that great artists and producers like Larry Banks remain unknown to the masses, and even many soul fans. But thanks to Ace Records and their Kent Soul division for helping promote the cause with another great collection of rare soul music.
