DVD Description

Continuing the heart-warming BBC adaptation of Flora Thompson’s memoir of life in late 19th century rural Oxfordshire.

The charming series set in a small hamlet and its neighbouring town sees the return of favourite characters including Dorcas, Laura, Daniel, the Pratt sisters, Alf, Minnie – and a fond welcome home for Alf’s mother, Caroline.

Candleford has a new arrival in Gabriel Cochrane, the handsome and once wealthy owner of a large iron foundry – now bitter, penniless and homeless. Moved by his plight, Dorca offers him a job as a blacksmith and a room above the forge.

Meanwhile, a distraught Ruby returns home to Pearl Pratt to find Daniel settled in all too comfortably; Emma finds herself in dire financial straits and in a complete predicament; a poetry competition sends everyone into a frenzy of excitement and Twister gets in trouble again when Queenie wins a pig at the local fair.

Just as Dorcas resolves to stop meddling in others affairs, she realises Gabriel’s plans will ruin him and his reputation. Her help might just keep him in town – something that seems increasingly important to her…

I am a huge fan of "Lark Rise to Candleford" (I absolutely loved the first three seasons which deserve 5 stars each!!!) but I must say that this fourth (and last) season was disppointing compared to the earlier ones. The storylines were much less interesting than they used to be --- it felt like the writers/producers just wanted to get it over with, so to speak, and didn't really put much thought into those final six scripts.

Despite that it's still "Lark Rise to Candleford", which is to say that it wasn't all bad! The first five episodes definitely had their good moments but overall there was just something missing. Laura and Daniel's romance moved as slowly as ever (I really would have liked to see more of them as a couple), just like that of Minnie and Alfie. Dorcas got a little romance, too, although it did not really ring true for me.

The sixth --- and final --- episode was a huge letdown! After I was done watching it I just thought "This is it???" .... I just could not believe that they would leave the fans hanging like that.

I mean, what was the point of bringing back Caroline in the last episode? If they had brought her back at the start of season 4 then that would have been fine, but the way it was done the whole story of her coming back and her strained relationship with her children felt rushed and didn't fit in the with the rest of season 4 (such as it was). They should have either brought her back earlier or not at all.

One character they should have brought back for at least the last episode is Robert Timmins. I realize the actor has a job on a different tv series now, but I'm sure he could have spared a day or two to make a short appearance on the final episode of "Lark Rise to Candleford".

Then there's Margaret's behaviour towards Thomas --- totally out of character and completely unnecessary. If this had been an episode somewhere in the middle of a full season then it probably wouldn't have bothered me so much, but why do something like that in the *final* episode? I just don't get it.

And if you're going to end a beloved show like this one .... why not give the fans what they want? They could have ended the series with a double wedding for Laura and Daniel and Minnie and Alfie, for example (or at least a single wedding for one of the couples). That would have been much preferable to what they actually did.

It's sad enough that they shot only 6 episodes for season 4, but to then not even to give the show a real ending --- one that is deserving of such a great show and the wonderful characters --- makes me sad and angry. It really is disappointing to see that such a wonderful show (and its fans) got such bad treatment by the BBC!

The least that they could do is make something like a two-hours special to give us a real ending --- perhaps one with a wedding or two ... and a christening ... ;o)

The first 3 series were excellent. This is not quite as gripping story wise, but non-the-less wonderfully enjoyable. I feel like I am sitting on a fence somewhere just watching those in the town and hamlet go about their business. It is the best escapism ever! I hope there will be as series 5! I am all for happy endings.

The last season of Lark Rise to Candleford consists only of six episodes, but it offers a satisfying conclusion to the whole story.
Obviously the show couldn't stay on the same level from the start but it's never disappointed me. And even though I was sceptical at first, I thought the new character fit in very well and made this season more interesting.
I missed an important character who never returned though.

In my opinion these kind of tv series are necessary nowadays because of their uplifting effect and positivity. I would put it in the same category as the Darling Buds of May.

Same as with Season Three, there are sadly no extras on this dvd set.

Wonderful example of a British series
We own a large number of British series both past and present. Thoroughly enjoy them all. Great character studies and a showcase for how they lived in this era.

Sunset to Candleford
This is the last in the series but seems to have been brought to a rather abrupt end. Could have been better if stretched out a little more but all in all an excellent series.
