Synopsis

Second series of the drama focusing on Oxfordshire communities at the end of the 19th century. The birth of a new baby brings financial hardship to the Timmins household, obliging eldest daughter Laura (Olivia Hallinan) to leave her home in the quiet hamlet of Lark Rise and embark on a new life in the busy, neighbouring market town of Candleford. Her adventurous cousin, postmistress Dorcas Lane (Julia Sawalha), takes Laura under her wing, and they soon become firm friends, experiencing together the romances, rivalries and comedies of close-knit rural life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful start to series 2, 9 Jan 2009
By Mrs. A. Gardner "Lucy Shore" (Surrey, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Series 2 has just began again first with a delightful christmas special, with Lark Rise and Candleford transformed into a snow white carpet, as we see the true feelings displayed by some of the characters caused by a mysterious young lady.
Now episode 1 has just aired on our screens and it is, if not more delightful than ever, with the sun forever shining and always able to make life just that bit more pleasant for an hour or so.
It is a shame that Zillah (Liz Smith) is no longer in the cast, not Sir Timothy (Ben Miles) but there are new cast members including the new love interest for Dorcas Lane, (Jason Merrels plays James Dowland)played by Julia Sawalha - who is forever wonderful and seems to give Dorcas just the right amount of happiness followed by remembrances or sadnesses that always seem to make me feel so sorry for her.
This series always brings out my softer side and I seem to go from laughing: seeing Dorcas falling of a new invention 'a bicylce,' to having tears in my eyes during the sentimental scenes.
I am so pleased that LRTC got a second series, I would hope for a third but I believe with the recession now, it is just wishful thinking.
It is a delight though to have it back on our screens once again and perfect for Sunday evenings, especially when the whether is still so cold.
I can't wait to buy series 2 when it comes out on dvd and shall look forward to watching it as I hope will my whole family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Viewing!, 16 Feb 2009
By Rachel "BrunettesRule..35" (Weston-Super-Mud, UK) - See all my reviews
Well I have to say that it is a long time since I got so absorbed into a series! I think Pride and Predjudice was the last time!!
Anyway......what a wonderful series! All I can say is well done to the BBC, for creating such a wonderfully warm, witty, intelligent, and thought provoking drama.
I love all of the characters.....each well cast, and acted superbly!
What a relief, from all of the drivel that is on our screens today!
(Soaps being the worst in my opinion, which portray all of the very worst aspects of our society!)
How refreshing to watch something that while still capturing the hardships, and srtuggles of life, does not soley focus on them!
Instead, the focus is mainly on the goodness of individuals, the importance of families, loyalty, honest hard work, and humour!
I believe this is why it is so enjoyable to watch....why I look forward to every episode! There is nothing offensive in it...so we can all watch it as a family. What a rariety that is these days!
Can't wait to buy this when it comes out on DVD! I have to say....this has to be one of my favourite productions! Well done the BBC!

4.0 out of 5 stars a slow-burner but well worth the wait, 5 Jun 2009
By C. Bradshaw "DrColin" (Newcastle UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As a great fan of the first series I was initially a bit disappointed with this as the first couple of episodes, particularly the Xmas special, where a bit underwhelming. However once the series got into it's stride it really crackled and some lesser characters became much bigger players, particularly Alf Arless and Twister & Queenie. The realtionship between Robert & Emma Timmins is explored in much greater depth and both Dorcas & Laura are portrayed as much less perfect and consequently more believeable. There are also a couple of great new characters of which Minnie almost steels the show. There are tales of mystery, seduction, betrayal and love - in fact all of life! I won't spoil them by giving hints but if you liked the 1st series, you'll love all 12 episodes
