The BBC’s costume drama juggernaut struck gold once more when it decided to tackle the work of Flora Thompson. And in adapting her books in the form of the television production Lark Rise To Candleford, it has brought another compelling piece of drama to the screen.

Lark Rise To Candleford is set at the end of the 19th century, and it follows the story of two communities in the midst of a developing Oxfordshire. One is a fast-growing market town, the other a sleepier, quieter place that’s holding more onto the past. Centred on Laura, the eldest daughter in the Timmins house, as she leaves the quieter life for work in the market town, the stage is then set for a quality drama series.

All ten episodes are present and correct on the Lark Rise To Candleford DVD set, and there’s a lot to enjoy. The cast, for instance, is simply terrific, with Julia Sawalha, Dawn French and Olivia Hallinan rightly taking plaudits. And the journey of their characters, along with those of the strong supporting cast, is simply wonderful television.

Mixing in humour, drama and the production values we seem to take for granted from the BBC, Lark Rise To Candleford really is quite a treat. And what’s more, it’s proof positive that when it comes to television period drama, there really isn’t anyway doing it better. Super stuff. --Jon Foster

Product Description

Flora Thompson's charming love letter to a vanished corner of rural England is brought to life in this warm-hearted adaptation. Set in the Oxfordshire countryside in the 1880s, this rich, funny and emotional series follows the relationship of two contrasting communities: Lark Rise, the small hamlet gently holding on to the past, and Candleford, the small market town bustling into the future. Seen through the eyes of young Laura, their inhabitants endure many upheavals and struggles as the inexorably change comes; their stories by turns poignant, spirited and uplifting. And Laura herself must face great change. Taking a job in Post Office in Candleford, run by the mercurial Dorcas, she turns her back on her childhood hamlet to make her way in the world. With her loyalties divided, she must choose her own path to womanhood...

5.0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air 17 Aug 2008
By Mariel
I loved everything about this production based on a book I had always meant to read, but somehow had never got around to it.

The series was like a breath of fresh air - an escape from the never-ending diet of real-life violence and murder stories, and the dreaded cheap reality shows that seem to be all pervasive these days. I found myself so looking forward to it, I rearranged my social life so as not to miss it. This is real quality TV, and I only wish there was more of it. This is British drama at its best. Julia Sawalha was absolutely brilliant, as always, and the ladies' costumes were outstanding. I don't usually buy DVD's because I tend to not watch programmes more than once - but this is a classic and I will definitely be watching it again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure entertainment 5 Mar 2011
I loved this series and I'm sorry that it has come to an end. I missed the first broadcast transmission of the series so was delighted to be able to catch up. All the characters are so well defined and acted that it's hard to believe it is fiction. It is a superb insight to the way things were in the country before we all had the means to travel around. It's impossible to find a favourite among them though I did like John Dalgleishs' characterisation of young Alf. The Misses Pratt were perfect and in the later episodes Minnie was delightfully scatty. My only critisism is the volume of sound. Even at 100% on the TV I still struggled to hear all that was said, and my hearing is not impaired. Otherwise it is excellent and far superior entertainment to some of the offerings on TV at the moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Delight! 11 Feb 2008
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I've been following this series on BBC1 every Sunday evening and as it's so brilliant that I couldn't wait to write a review. It's based on the semi-autobiographical books of Flora Thompson who grew up in Oxfordshire at the end of the 19th century.

The series stars a young woman, Laura, who leaves her family in the poor village of Lark Rise to work as an assistant to the post mistress in the posher town of Candleford. This series has everything. Light-hearted moments, tender scenes, forbidden love across the social divide, hideous snobs in the form of the two brilliantly named and brillinatly played Pratt sisters, and bags and bags of humour. There is grace personified by the post mistress Dorcas Lane who is fantastically played by Julia Sawalha, and the dashing young squire portrayed by Ben Miles.

This is the perfect Sunday evening drama series which you can happily watch with your whole family, both young and old. If you have actually read the books you may be slightly disappointed as some liberties have been taken with the text, but for those of us who haven't it's a perfect delight.

SAFE READING - NO SPOILERS (For specific information about storylines, please see the product details.)

"Lark Rise to Candleford - Complete Series 1-4" Box Set [DVD] with Olivia Hallinan, Julia Sawalha "et al" is a good DVD from these excellent series which held that top spot on Sunday evenings. My wife loved it and, having been born in rural farming commmunity in Cornwall, it made her feel a little at home; visiting my daughter in rural Wiltshire, I drive through villages that once were the Larkrise and Candleford of their day and still seem trapped in a generous timewarp.

The characters were fully-drawn and well-developed as the series progressed and it was easy to identify with their joys, sorrows and travails.

For anyone who enjoys a costume drama, and the BBC does them better than anyone else, this is ideal. Idealised - yes. Romaticised - yes. That's all part of the pleasure and a break from the usual news and current affairs searching out the dreary, disturbing and destructive in life. For a little uplift, this DVD is excellent.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not one of Auntie's best. 6 Dec 2012
By Richard
I came to see this series only recently (2012) --long after it's original release. In my case, I watched it as a boxed set from my local library and so saw the entire initial run over about three nights viewing. I mention this because, clearly the series was designed as a feel-good sunday night sort of family show --the type of thing the BBC have always excelled at and I suspect that the enormous popularity of the series (judging from the Amazon reviews) probably owes quite a bit to the sort of affection attached to catching such shows. Evidently this one was welcomed by a large viewing public as a refreshing antidote to the run-of-the-mill contemporary stuff filling our screens. That's understandable. However, I have to say that viewing it as a continuous whole shows up it's flaws quite markedly.

In particular, it comes over as a very calculatedly conceived bit of TV 'product'; and one so desperately anxious to be a commercial hit that it resorts to an overly populist reading of the source historical material. It purports to show a late 19th Century agrarian England but actually does little more than project a chocolate box Heritage Industry type simulation thereof; one populated by characters reflecting psyches more to do with our own period and enacting often rather soapy scenarios the themes of which are quite obviously targeting/playing up to a contemporary audience. Not much attempt is made to present us with insights into a different age. Instead the scripts look to dwell in a nostalgic, feel-good picture of Olde England in which we can easily recognise the cliched archetypes presented as people basically like ourselves. The world in the original book is a far richer, more complex a social reality.
