About the Author

Jean Van Hamme is one of the best-known European comic book scriptwriters. His most popular series include "Thorgal" and "XIII" (both in English from Cinebook). In 2005, he was appointed "Officier des Arts et des Lettres" by the French Minister of Culture. Philippe Francq worked at the Herge Studios with Bob de Moor. He then collaborated with de Groot and Delvaux before meeting Van Hamme and working on "Largo Winch."

Two-Fisted Capitalism vs Shady Business 28 Mar. 2013

This is part one of a two parter that continues in "The Law of the Dollar." Largo 'Winch' Winczlav, skeptical heir to the mega-business conglomerate The W Group, is confronted on a talk show by the former CEO of a recent acquisition. When the man commits suicide, Largo feels compelled to investigate what appears to be seriously unethical business practices that are having a devastating impact on a midwestern factory town. The CEO's beautiful daughter adds the sex to complement the violence (the sex is not graphic in the figurative sense.) Like most of the adventures this volume ends with Largo left in a cliffhanger, with the resolution in volume two.

Van Hamme has a truly remarkable ability to spin a tale that combines action, intrigue, and social commentary on business law within the confines of a comic book (European-style, this is an oversize board book.) I'm not a huge fan of the style of artist Philippe Francq, but his work is well-executed and supports the story ably. The translation (the stories were originally published in French) is very good.

The series is apparently a popular one in France; although I wasn't particularly crazy about this episode it's well done if you like this kind of thing. Apparently the series largely follows the same basic plot: some business scheme is afoot to sieze or otherwise take advantage of the W Group, and Largo has to fight, both literally and in boardroom politics, to defeat the entity behind the attack. It's worth a read.
