Product Description

Product Description

Eddie Large and Syd Little dominated television screens across the nation for fifteen years; drawing in record viewing figures of more than 16 million at their peak. They are fondly remembered as two Britain's finest comedians, taking the winning double act formula and making it their own. For the first time Eddie Large tells his own amazing story of their antics and their sometimes turbulent yet continuing life-long friendship. Larger Than Life is his own account of his rise to fame, from his earliest days with Syd and their young dreams of rock 'n' roll stardom through to the realisation of their popularity. Still one of the country's most respected comics, Eddie Large speaks openly and honestly about his hard upbringing, opening up in this uplifting and humorous autobiography of a larger than life man with a larger than life personality.

Format:Hardcover
This is worth reading, especially in conjunction with Sid Little's second (!) autobiography, co-written with Chris Gidney but seemingly unavailable on Amazon.

Large, aka Eddie McGuinness, is at times less than charitable to his partner, and there are scores to settle, though the main thrust of the book is an anecdote-filled account of the long slow climb to the top, more vividly told (he does after dinner speaking, I believe) than in Sid's rather vapid book, which covers much of the same ground in a less entertaining way, although whether this may be because of the respective skills of collaborators Chris Gidney and Stafford Hildred or because of Little's own character I couldn't say.

Large/McGuinness paints Sid as a coward who will do anything to avoid confrontation and who therefore has to bear responsibility for his well-publicised family troubles. But what intrigues me is the long years together, the continuing to work even when Large has serious heart problems - during one pantomime he is so incapacitated that "Eddie's bench" has to be set up in the wings as he is unable even to walk to his dressing room between scenes - but with summer seasons dying off and TV work less plentiful pantomimes remain one way to earn some decent money. So the story of Little and Large is not simply about the animosity between the two men but the punishing workload of a double act who never achieved the luxury afforded to Morecambe and Wise (okay, even if they lacked a similar talent) and therefore had to keep on slogging even after telly fame.

Little indicates in his book he'd be happy to do the occasional gig with Large but this doesn't seem to be reciprocated; Large seems to think that Sid's espousal of Christianity is a way of avoiding facing up to his own role in the neglect of his family.
