It's big, heavy and solid, like a good pestle and mortar should be. Smooth enough on the inside that bits don't get stuck in grooves but rough enough to grind in seconds, in small or large quantities. I cook a lot of Indian and Thai food; this is perfect for making pastes and the ingredients don't discolour it or leave a smell.
It's also really beautiful - the pictures on here don't do it justice. I keep it on my kitchen worktop all the time, partly because I use it a lot but mostly because it looks so good.
I did a lot of research to find the right pestle and mortar before buying this one and reckon it's the best about, especially for the very reasonable price. Highly recommended.

I would endorse the other views expressed. It is big. It is h_e_a_v_y. You probably won't have shelf or cupboard space for it but no matter since it looks like primitive artwork when left out.

This is the best I have ever used. Don't hesitate: buy it. And reinforce your work surface, it weighs half a tonne!

granite mortar and pestle
Very heavy,it does not move in use. It makes short work of grinding the spices and is large enough for salsa etc. It also looks good on the work top.

Pestle and mortar
Makes light work of grinding spices. It is also large enough that they dont jump out the bowl if you bash them.

Fantastic must have kitchen item
Lovely heavyweight item - is a great feature as well and it's perfect for grinding, crushing etc. I bought it as a present for my husband and he loves it. It's perfect!!
