In Greek mythology, Hebe is the goddess of youth and cup bearer to the gods (i.e. she pours out the nectar, which gives them immortality). She is daughter of Zeus and Hera, and sister to Ares, whom she bathed and dressed after returning from battle. When Herakles (Hercules) finished his tasks and became immortal, he was married to Hebe, and this settled the feud with her mother. Hebe returned to her cup-bearing duties for a while during the Trojan War as talk of the war upset Ganymede (formerly a Trojan prince). The gods preferred to be served by Hebe because she was better looking - apparently, she had exceptionally good ankles!
This statue is from Italy and the one I bought at my local garden centre was £249. There is a decent range of these statues, but some of the UK sellers are renaming them so watch out for this. They are made in Italy and the quality is excellent - the statue is smooth like marble, but not as hard and cold, and I would say the average person wouldn't notice it's 'only' a composite. Treat it like chalk when you are moving it, though (lift, don't drag!), because it will leave a white trail behind if you twist it this way and that to get it into position. This 160cm version weighs 40kg and so you'll need at least two strong people to lift it. Most of the weight is in the base, but the shoulder end is also cumbersome to carry. There is a lot to be said for having this lady delivered, but I saved £100 by going to The Garden Centre. If you are wondering if the statue is too big for your garden, I would suggest you err on the side of caution, and buy the shorter version. The plinth is integral to the statue (i.e. they were cast together as one piece as opposed to being connected afterwards). She looks ridiculously ostentatious in my garden, but I have an interest in Classical Civilisation and this is the first time in about twenty years that I have seen an affordable statue that isn't ugly or made from poor materials, so I had to have her. With hindsight, I should have gone for the smaller version, but this statue will look great with a bit of weathering and some tall evergreen shrubs. Incidentally, if you don't like the white, you can buy these statues in a 'pre-weathered' finish too. If you decide to make something like a 'moss milkshake', be careful because this statue isn't marble and the results may not be what you wanted.
There are two things to point out that made this a four-star purchase for me. First, if she straightened her left leg, it would be longer than the right one (if you do look at the rest of the range, watch out for some very strange body proportions - 'David' is hilarious!); and the other issue is that her cup is connected to her bosom. I can live with that because I have created a tall, shrubby area, where the statue will only be viewed from the front, but you might want to look closely at this if you will be viewing from the side, or placing her out in the open for people to walk round. I didn't notice this until after I had got her home, but it wouldn't have put me off the purchase because I've been after one of these for so long.
I wholeheartedly recommend this statue in either size, along with some of the other figures in the range. The only thing I am unsure of is how this statue might fare during the winter. It is supposed to be frost resistant, but there is always freeze-thaw damage to consider as well. I have mounted the statue on a raised slab and will probably cover it all over during the winter - certainly the cup will have to be emptied and covered. If you have space to store it indoors during the winter, that might be a good idea. Anyway, I'll update this review if anything bad happens. ...Fingers crossed!Read more ›
This is a very large statue, but luckily I have a large garden. She is well made and looks stunning. Im quite a fan of statues and have several smaller ones in my garden, but she is by far my fave. I would recommend this statue.
