Product Description

Amazon Review

Jill Murphy has been hitting the nail of family life well and truly on the head with the everyday adventures of the rather marvellous Large family--the long-suffering Mrs Large with her erstwhile hubby Mr Large doing battle with Lester, Laura and the baby.

The Large Family Album brings together four classic Large stories in one bumper volume.Five Minutes Peace, with Mrs Large desperately trying to escape the family for just a little while, is an absolute classic; All In One Piece sees Mr and Mrs Large trying to escape for a night out without the kids; A Piece of Cake has Mrs Large putting the entire family on a diet and A Quiet Night In that Mrs Large has planned for her husband's birthday turns out to be not quite what she had in mind...

A fantastic collection of picture stories, beautifully written and illustrated with a classic wit that will strike a chord in every family, The Large Family Album is one book that no home should be without. I (and my son) became fans of the Large family since we read the first book, Five Minutes Peace. I was looking for hardback edition with all four stories, alas without success. So... as soon as this book appeared at Amazon I've ordered it although we already had all the four books in paperbacks. I have to say I am slightly disappointed by this edition compared with paperback versions. Some of the pictures got too small while others (for instance, my son's favourite one where the dieting elephants get rid of crisps, bisquits and bananas) have disappeared altogether. If you have kids and never had any of the Large family books, buy this book. It is great value and stories are just wonderful. You will love them. But if you've got the original paperbacks, don't hurry to throw them away.

My four-year-old son and I love the Large family. The pictures are really great and the best thing about them is that the stories are easy to relate to, as they happen to most of us. A quiet night in sets a good example for kids and makes it easy to explain that a little 'non-kids-time' can be neccessary.

I won't comment on the quality of the writing, as many other reviewers have voiced their opinions on that subject, but please be aware that this collection only contains about half the illustrations from the books as they were published in their single-story form. Since it is the pictures rather than the words that appeal to the younger reader (and, I suspect, most of the older readers too), this is not the money-saving opportunity it may appear.

I had purchased one of the individual books and enjoyed it very much with my 2 year old daughter, so decided to purchase this collection to get the rest. I found it much more wordy since there is now twice as much text per illustration, and it is less appealing to its intended audience because of this imbalance. Avoid this edition and buy the single books (or get them from the library!)

This is a lovely beautifully illustrated book of stories for children, which adults can relate to and enjoy just as much, which makes the repetitive reading which is required at this age, so much easier to take.
Family situations which everyone can relate to, but with elephants, brilliant. I used to run a playgroup, and enjoyed these stories with many children, and am now embarking on a new career as a granny, and am stockpiling delights like these for the benefits of the grandchildren already here and those hopefully to come.

Cute series about the Large family and all the typical day to day things that happen to any family with three or more children. My favorites in this group are "Five Minutes Peace" and "Mr. Large In Charge" but this is a nice change of pace and the Little Favourites edition fits easily in a handbag for something to read while waiting etc. Illustrations are nicely done as well.

I have to disagree with many of the reviews here. I feel that this book is poorly written with a large amount of dialogue and consequent excessive use of of the word "said" and very little description. Many of the books we read our daughter we believe set her good examples, not this one. It describes eating meals off trays in front of the tv, random evening routines and most concerning, gender stereotypes "I don't like this book, it's a boy's book" which is exactly what we discourage for our dinosaur and car loving daughter. On a positive note (after changing some of the words) our 2 yr old does seem to enjoy the book but it is not one she quotes as she does with many others.

I got this for the kids to give to Daddy for his birthday and they were delighted when he read it to them. The only thing my husband said when I asked if he liked it was that it's very realistic. It's about Mr. Large coming home from a hard days work for a quiet birthday night in. The Large children then grab him at the door to have him for themselves - similar theme to Five Minutes Peace Large family book where Mammy suffers their love.
