This is the famous movie version of the highly successful video game. Both my 12 year old daughter and I are big fans of the video game, in all its iterations. Angelina Jolie plays Lara, and she has the looks, physique, character and presence, to carry off the role convincingly. This video-game based action blockbuster delivers in terms of its casting, cinematography and action sequences. But it is less successful when it comes to script, plot and dialogue. Chris Barrie (best known for his role in Red Dwarf) plays Lara's "manservant", and attacks the role with great gusto and skill. Jon Voight and Daniel Craig, both excellent actors, also appear and they add gravitas to the film. In a nutshell, Lara is an adventurer-explorer, expertly trained in weaponry and physical combat, a seeker of lost and hidden treasures, i.e. very much the female equivalent of Indiana Jones. The film, just like a Bond movie or Raiders film, is packed with impressive stunts. Proudly displaying immodest boobs (not quite literally, but her bodysuit is definitely very figure hugging), significant brawn, and a wily brain, Ms Jolie gives an eye-catching performance as the central character. I recently watched this film again with my daughter, back to back with the sequel. My daughter just about preferred this film, but I definitely preferred the sequel, which I review elsewhere (giving it a solid 4 stars - Lara Croft - Tomb Raider/Lara Croft - Tomb Raider: Cradle Of Life [Blu-ray] ). This is an okay action movie, not as good as a decent Bond film or an Indiana Jones flick, but just about competent enough not to be a turkey. If you're an adult fan of Angelina Jolie, and want to see her on dispIay in a skimpy, skin-tight outfit, you might think that alone is almost reason enough to sit through this film. In any event, my daughter absolutely loved it, so what do I know!

The planets are aligning and some pretty wierd stuff is going on in Lara's understairs cupboard (fnar fnar). The very fabric of time is under threat and if she wants to save the world from the evil clutches of the Illuminati, she's going to have to get her skates on (not to mention an industrial-grade bra).

I have long been absolutely mad on the whole TR concept and, when this - the first film - was announced, I awaited it with great anticipation, although I was a little sceptical about the idea of Angelina Jolie playing Ms Croft. In all respects, though, this film easily achieves its goals and satisfies expectations.

The look of it is spectacular. It could easily have been spoiled by an inadequate budget or miserly set design, but really it looks fantastic. Kick-ass action sequences, globe trotting locations and sumptuously stunning sets. Most importantly, the film tries very hard to remain faithful to the game series (and succeeds). The sets and story-line retain the (slightly corny) mysticism of the game, there are are some very TR-RPG camera angles and even the colouring and lighting seem to be strongly reminiscent.

Overall I think Ms Jolie does a fine job as the title character - she is acceptably English, suitably athletic, and appropriately pneumatic "up front" - a very convincing Lara Croft. It's nice to see Daniel Craig, Chris Barrie, Ian Glen, Julian Rhind-Tutt and even Leslie Phillips all playing their parts in support. I do feel that the producers rather overdid the "Englishness" of the film and the various players (pandering to the American audience, my inner bigot tells me) but one can't have everything and I suppose that the original Lara was in some ways a stereotypical Brit.

Yes, it's not the best film ever. I'll start off by saying this.

It is however, one of my favourite kinds of film. A brainless one.
With the simple plot of "bad stuffs goin' on", shortly followed by "Lara must stop bad stuffs". Really, that's about as advanced as the plot ever gets. But that's not a bad thing, it keeps the film shallow, and easy to enjoy in a simplistic way.

I think most people have assessed Angelina's acting, so I'll say this: Chris Barry plays an amazing butler in the film, and the film really has it's funny moments. There aren't loads of them, but they are appreciated. Additionally, the film really captured the feel of the games in terms of terrain (aka tombs).

For a brainless, yet ultimately enjoyable film, I'd say this one definitely fills the quota. I'd also say it's a lot better than most people give it credit for.

For the price, I'd say it's a bargain.

This film has had a lot of bad press said about it since its release, i personally think this is unfair. Ok so the plot is a little thin, but surely a person sitting down to watch this film wants action???
Let me tell you there are some amazing action sequences in this film, brilliantly acted by angelina jolie, who looked like she was born to play this character. Angelina Jolie is an amazing actress who plays the character of Lara Croft with an air of elegance, she really does excel in this role.
This film deserves more credit than it is given, the action is far superior than most films out even today, you must buy this dvd if only to see the Lara try to defend her house, a standout part of the film. You simply have to ignore the reviews and find out for yourself just how good this film is.
