I would imagine that there are equally informative books that don't confuse the readers' computer illiteracy with his or her being generally thick, as this book seems to. However, there is a wealth of knowledge, tips and fixes that are very useful - but I find I have to grit my teeth to open the pages. You may want to see some reviews on similar books before opting for this one. The only reason I gave it three stars is because of the tips - I'd been struggling to set up a wireless network at home and cracked it in a few minutes with the help of this book. I hate to admit it - but it is helpful.

Highly recommended. I know a lot of people don't like the folksy style of the Dummies books but they are undoubtedly friendly and unintimidating. This one contains an interesting history of the laptop and many of its suggestions are tip top. It forced me to sit down and look at my laptop properly for the first time, really overhaul the junk that I had on it, sort out its battery life and give it some extra memory. Fantastic! Like having a new machine.
