Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Seems like a good idea doesn't it?

Laplink used to be the bees knees many years ago, when we had DOS and Win 98, pre USB sticks and CD-ROMs with limited ways of joining computers together. I still have the old serial cables. Yah! (Why!?)

This version comes with a CAT5 network cable and the software will link two machines together and transfer files over it.

Now the tough bit - this program is brilliant for transferring like to like, ie XP-to XP or Vista to Vista,
but it is not great for transferring to another O/S (operating System, eg: Win XP to Win 7.
I'm not even going to talk about Linux machines - you're own your own there!

PCmover is not designed to move data from newer operating systems to older ones; doing so may render your system un-bootable (Gathered from many negative personal reviews on the net) - But it will move data files - note that Win 7 store them in a totally different manner from win XP, but there is advice on how to find them afterwards.

If your PC has multiple users, all the users' settings and files can be transferred in the same operation, including the security settings. This good. However security settings between different O/S systems are not the same - so scratch that in that case.

This is not a quick way of circumventing a Microsoft Office licence. Unless you have a retail licence on the product, you won't be able to get it to run on a new PC anyway, as it's only Activate-able on the PC on which it was first installed. If you have the disks anyhow - its simpler to re-install a nice fresh copy on the new machine, which if it is a different O/S will cause different settings to be employed anyhow - thus proving to be the better choice.

Anti-virus and anti-spyware programs may not transfer and any hardware configuration information, such as printer drivers, will not be migrated. Music files with Digital Rights Management and any applications that need special keys or serial numbers may likewise fail to transfer or be incomplete.
Apple iPod programs have a backup and restore feature anyhow - it uses DVD-ROMs and then you also have a physical backup to lock in the family safe.

Reports of Customer Service vary - they do respond, but often not usefully - again taken from other reviews out there on the net, because I've not had to call them!

So what use is it?

Good question - if you want to transfer files from an identical O/S to another, it would be the best software out there to buy.

If you have a new shiny Win 7 PC (I mean who in their right mind would install the hated Vista again?)
and want to transfer data from your tatty Win XP machine - there are other ways!

1) Use the built in Microsoft Transfer settings program - personally I've never bothered with it - unnecessary unless you use a dial up modem.

2) Data files (Word, Excel, Photos, PowerPoint funnies etc.) Simply use a big USB stick (4mb will do easily) and transfer them or better still - burn them as a backup to a DVD-ROM and hide in the family safe (What you don't have one?)

3) My preferred method, open the case and plug the old drive into a spare SATA or PATA (older style) cable and a spare power cable and use it as a backup disc. If you need to transfer files to the new drive - you can do it in your own sweet time and its much, much faster than any other option.
For temporary use, just lie the drive on top of the old one - use a beer mat for insulation, and turn the circuit board side upwards. There is ALWAYS room for a 2nd hard drive and there are spare power cables, A SATA cable will cost about £1 or x10 that in certain PC W**ld style chains - look around. Maplin / e-Bay or CPC Farnell sell them cheap. There are hundreds of DIY video sites that show you how to do it, or buy me a Guinness instead.

It really is that easy!

Update: i've used it to transfer a laptop Win XP customisation to another - it did it - eventually - but then I had to re-install major parts of the O/S and re-download MS Security, rather pointless for time and productivity - then I had to do another machine (all identical Laptops)
This 3rd one, I used a series of setup programs stored on a USB Flash drive - simpler, one heck of a lock simpler and we are talking system firmware utilities from the manufacturers website and small freeware apps -Picassa, Irfan view, MS Powertools TweakUI, Open Office and some similar tools.

Verdict - quicker and much simpler by USB flash drive.

There are many products out there that move your files from a system to another, this product is aimed at moving both your files and your programs across to another system. Installation of the product was quite quick and problem free on a Windows 7 machine. There are a few words of caution though - it is best to go up in operating system, for example from Windows XP to Windows 7, not the other way. Once I had finished the process I found one application did not work, and spent time trying to fix it. I think the product is a good idea, however is probably a bit too advanced for a standard IT home user, and to get the most out of it you would need some additional technical knowledge in case you ran into any problems.

OK, let's be honest......whatever hardware you've just rushed out and bought in the sales today will be staring in the antiques road show well before "Lost" comes to a conclusion or you've upgraded the sofa! With hardware manufacturers constantly enticing us with even better, faster, smaller versions of whatever, you'd think they or their software counterparts would at least do something to help us keep up with the annual exchange of metal!

Not so and thus it was with bated breath that I received my copy of PC Mover Ultimate from Amazon with my wife's redundant netbook packed full of software goodies all awaiting their new laptop home! I'd actually used laplink before, when with a cable the size of a ship's anchor and a longer wait than that for Godot - it successfully and painlessly (well relatively!) transferred all my programmes from an old Compaq to a newer Lenovo! That was some 6 years ago however, the question today was....how would the very latest version compete???

Well the answer is, a very mixed bag to be honest, very mixed indeed! To start with, installing the programme was relatively easy (despite the fact that my netbook had no disk drive!). Nothing in the ever so thin users guide to help me bridge that knowledge gap, although it did install form a memory stick and all was ready to go! The software came with the laplink cable although in theory, the transfer can be done via a network, wireless or even Bluetooth option.

Opting for safety and speed, I chose the cable method, linked the two PC's, followed the instructions and off we went.............errrm, well not quite actually. Despite successfully connecting both PC's and getting them to recognise each other, either the data transfer stopped after about 30 seconds, or I got a message saying that the connection could not be made! I referred to the manual............the prerequisites state that ALL background programmes must be switched off on both PC's(including anti-viral, firewalls, Skype etc) and both PC's must never enter "idle" or battery save mode during the transfer! OK, did all that (not as easy as it sounds!)and returned to the transfer. Another hour or so passed, this time the process would stop at all stages of the transfer, from connecting the PC's to the actual data transfer itself! The gut churningly annoying common denominator being that NO error codes ever came up, PC mover simply "stopped" with the screen displaying an ever so polite "transfer incomplete!" message with a new screen appearing offering the (by now very irate) operator the latest trial versions of other laplink products (not a good idea!). As a final attempt I grabbed the phone to ring the customer service helpline, only to discover the number did not exist!

Undeterred, I emailed the main support team and sure enough, 24hrs later came a reply. A few emails later (including one where I was told to form a windows workgroup between the two PC's and to ensure I could "ping" each PC IP address), to my astonishment - success! In a matter of 2 hours all files and selected programmes (including the hefty Microsoft office package) where safely in their new homes and even more surprisingly, all worked! Laplink automatically disabled any incompatible, old, or redundant files, allowing the user the chance to enable such data after the transfer, even all my old Outlook emails where snug and warm (and in the right files) in the new PC! Impressive!

Therein lies the irony of PC Mover. The actual product works and in truth, works very well for anyone who wishes to migrate their data and programmes from old to new. That said the manual is grossly inadequate, the actual software could be one heck of a lot more intuitive (where are those error codes, onscreen help, transfer wizards, an informative manual etc??). Furthermore, the website forum on PC mover did not list a single issue that I had encountered (how is the user meant to know about "pinging" each PC's IP address and setting up a workgroup to rectify known issues??). Had laplink invested in these key areas they would have an extremely useful product (and a lot of very happy users!). Until these issues are addressed my recommendation would be to use the efficient email support team in the case of any problems - who like myself, will eventually get you there!

Yes, recommended but could so easily have been a 5 star and pain free recommendation if only the Laplink software was designed and formatted to work with you not against you!
