I recommend this pump to anyone who is planning to breastfeed/express for a few months. I started out with a Phillips hand pump, and within about 2 days realised that an electric pump was essential. I then went through two Medela Swing pumps, both of which broke over the course of about 5 months. The first, the motor went and it was literally sucking in my nipple. Mothercare replaced it for free. The second, the valve broke and the suction went. In addition, milk would back flow into the tube and turn black with mold, which didn't seem very sanitary. I then bought the Lansinoh double pump from Amazon.
Lansinoh vs Medela Swing: The negatives...
The Lansinoh double pump is not as 'comfortable' as the Medela Swing. It is a little noisier, and the rigid breast shields do not mold to the breast as well. It is probably a bit more expensive also (though not if you consider that the Medela is capable of breaking as per above). The Medela bottles are also bigger than the Lansinoh ones.
The positives...
In my opinion, the negatives mentioned above are all a small price to pay for the speed and efficiency of a double pump over a single pump. I wish I'd had the Lansinoh the first 5 months I was breastfeeding, because it would have cut the pumping time in half, and I probably would have got more milk. If I had it to do over, I simply would not bother with a single pump. There are probably better double pumps you can buy for a lot more money, but for me, the Lansinoh was perfectly adequate, and value for money. As for comfort - is this really a big issue? I found pumping annoying and unpleasant anyway, so getting it over with faster is well worth the slightly more uncomfortable breast shield. Another positive is the 'closed system' which means that the milk doesn't back up into the tube like it did on the Medela.
Note that I only used the Lansinoh for a few months at the end of my breastfeeding time. I don't know how robust it would have been had I used it the whole time. However, given my issues with the Medela, I doubt it would have been worse as far as reliability.
Overall, I recommend this pump as value for money that will help the expressing process go faster.
