This book is invaluable in giving suggestions on how to make your language lessons fun. It covers all aspects of language learning from vocabulary to pronunciation, writing, reading and listening.
Each game is detailed giving important indicators of the age group it is appropriate for as well as the language level. Variations are also offered to prevent the game from becoming tedious and to tailor the game to the different pupil learning abilities.
The suggested games and contests are actually meant to be played either in pairs or groups. This guarantees that all pupils participate and to encourage less able or more shy pupils to join in.

I am not a teacher so have not put the book to use. I bought it to give me some idea of how to teach a language is undertaken as I am taking a TEFL course in a few weeks and shall be going to Italy and staying with a family whose children want to speak English better.
Unfortunatly the book is a very old print 1980, and the cover is nothing like the attractive one as shown on Amazon, I suppose the contents are the same though.
From what I can see it seems a good little book and is in good condition for a second hand one although the pages are brownish with age.

Title is misleading

I purchased this with the impressions it would be good for a foreign language teacher. I also thought there would be games in the book. The title would be much better if it said "exercises and drills." Very few of the suggestions in the book are truly games. For example, holding up an item and asking "What is it?" and answering isn't a game nor a contest. They aren't bad exercises and drills for an ESL class but few would work well in a foreign language classroom. The majority of the ideas are for younger, I would say 3rd grade or under, students.
One idea that would work well would be to write an advise column (not really a game or contest though.) The game of professions and items used might be fun in a FL classroom. The explain items to a Martian would probably be fun in a FL as well.
So, if you're a FL teacher, pass on this book.

This book is a solid resource for ESL teachers. I was never a big fan of reading instructional material-such as how to play games or use ESL activities online, I'd just rather see something done than read about it. However...
This book was a tool that I used to create an instructional website that's loaded with ESL games and how to teach English videos. I'd recommend it. The only criticism I could say about it is that some of the directions for playing the games were rather difficult to follow. But you know what? I encountered that while reading other instructional materials for ESL. So it's not just this it's the media and perhaps my learning style.
That's why I decided to create a video how-to guide where you could see the games and activities being done in the classroom in front of your eyes.
There's a lot of games in here. I like his comment about that games are more than just for filling in odd moments or for special days. There are games like that, but for the most part games are an essential part of the lesson.
