Review

Teachers will find this book very useful. It provides practical ideas that they can use in the classroom to develop childrens speaking and listening skills in a structured way. --Carolyn Maples, Headteacher Ofsted Inspector

This programme is very clearly laid out and easy to understand and score. It's excellent as a classroom based assessment. --Independent Talking Points

This resource is useful and relevant in clinics and schools...value for money...versatile and practical. --Speech and Language Therapy in Practice

Product Description

While most children develop verbal reasoning skills with relative ease, others find it more challenging. Verbal reasoning is particularly difficult for children who are recognised as having delayed language skills, specific language impairment, Autistic Spectrum Disorder (including Asperger's Syndrome), pragmatic language impairment or moderate learning difficulties. Children with less obvious oral language difficulties may begin to struggle when they start to read. This photocopiable resource provides a clear structure to assist teachers, SENCOs, learning support assistants and speech language therapists in developing children's language from the concrete to the abstract. It is based on fifty picture and verbal scenarios that can be used flexibly with a wide range of ages and abilities. - Quick, practical and easy to use in the classroom, this programme can be used with individual children, in small groups or can form the basis of a literacy lesson or speech language therapy session. - Question sheets are carefully structured to promote children's development of inference, verbal reasoning and thinking skills. - The three parallel assessments of spoken and written language can be used to assess each child's starting level and then to monitor progress; score forms and worksheets for each lesson are included.

Language for Thinking 27 Jun 2010
By karen
Format:Spiral-bound
We purchased this book to use with our 9 year old son who has high functioning autism. It is a great book. This book could be used by parents or by someone at school who is working with your child. It provides you with a picture, scenario to read out and then the questions you could ask. As a parent it is empowering to purchase a book like this one that explains one step at a time what sort of questions or comments to make to get your child talking about the picture/situation, so you don't panic your child by asking questions that are too hard for them and ultimately make them feel like they are failing.

I am in NZ and this book, including postage was half the price to purchase from amazon.co.uk than it was from an internet bookshop in NZ. It was also difficult to source in NZ.

This book is really good to develop listening, explaining and thinking skills. Has initial assessment and grades where to start - whether words are seen or read out etc, whether pictures are seen or just words.
Need to make sure representations are within child's experience e.g. cinema
Overall great tool for SEN

This is an excellent resource for Speech Pathologists and Teachers alike. It is easy to use and the screening tool is usefulway of deciding the starting point for working with a child's language. The three levels gives flexibility and opportunity to tailor make the language activity to suit the child. I have just bought two copies, one for my department and one to lend to the teaching staff.
