I have been a fan of Langgaard's Music of the Spheres since purchasing the Chandos recording back in 1997. After being overwhelmed by a live performance of the same at the 2010 proms I decided to splash out on this boxed set of his symphonies. Glorious! Why are these never performed? Since it has taken the world outside Denmark around 80 years to realise the genius of Nielsen, it should not be that surprising. Plus, Langgaard really is VERY eccentric. His symphonies range from the Mahlerian 1 hour grandeur of his 1st symphony (premiered by the Berlin Philharmonic, no less) to the 6 minutes of symphony 11. His range of ideas is bewildering, but always clinging to tonality, at a time when this was becoming less fashionable in Europe. Anyone with an open mind should hear this music. Together with the new Dacapo recording of Music of the Spheres recorded by the same forces, the CDs make a case for Langgaard to be recognised as one of the great orchestral composers of the 20th century.
