Decent review if you have time 20 April 2011

The book is very OB/Gyn language oriented, which is nice for the clerkship because it's a language unto itself. The book is also detail oriented, which is good because the shelf exam for ob/gyn is quite detail oriented--the most specific one by far I think. Knowing the details behind diseases and management definitely helped with the trickiness of board questions. You may need lots of time to run through it, I used five weeks during clerkship and nearly finished. Unfortunately , all the OB is in front of the book, and I had two OB questions on the actual test, meaning I ran out of time before studying the gyn onc section which there was more of on the actual test. I would mark questions you missed and redo them, it helped me at least; and I would alternate between a gyn and an ob chapter.

I don't give four stars because the book is awkwardly riddled with errors--it says the answer is "C", but then explains why the option for A is the correct answer, and that happened throughout the book and became frustrating. It claims to explain wrong answer choices, but really does not do that very adequately or often. Overall, though, it was worth the time and effort.

    Good luck
Annoying Errors and not ALL fact based 13 Jan 2012

I echo many of the comments of the first review. The book is pretty good for preparing for the boards in the questions being detailed and the answers having explanations. I would also emphasize how annoying the regular occurring errors in listing the answers to the questions were. It will say the answer is A, yet go on to explain how the answer is actually what was choice C ?? This made things regularly confusing and resulted in me putting the book aside a handful of times.

I also noticed difference between answers in this text versus things I've read in Blueprints or from my school syllabi. For all those in rotations, it really emphasizes that each doc really has their own style and opinions. However, for a textbook, I want black and white answers. I want the evidence-based answers and explicit statements where evidence is lacking. Perhaps some of the issues are due to the older version of the textbook and our knowledge evolving.

Overall the book is OK. It's great prep for the style of Board questions and has some good teaching in explanations to each question, but I wouldn't recommend it as a good learning resource.
