Format: Audio CD
'Death Speaks' is a song cycle of-sorts by American composer/writer
David Lang. These five haunting pieces hang in the air like a frozen
last breath; beautiful but with the capacity to grasp your heart
between cold bony fingers and squeeze until we taste the bitterness
of oblivion. Death's words are given human shape through the otherworldly
voice of Sara Worden; a fragile but chillingly focused instrument which
inhabits these sinewy melodic inventions like a disembodied wraith.

Although Mr Lang has spoken about the influence of the songs of Franz
Schubert in the genesis of this work, one senses that the spirits of the
English Renaissance composers William Byrd and (especially) John Dowland
might also be listening quietly in the wings. They would, I'm sure, be pleased.

The small instrumental ensemble : Nico Muhly, piano; Bryce Dessner, guitar
and Owen Pallet, violin, provide exemplary support in their execution of
this curiously transparent and understated but achingly affecting score.

A final piece 'Depart' features the multi-layered cello of Meya Beiser
and voice of Elizabeth Forman. A poignant wordless threnody to accompany
us to the very edge of the void for a glimpse of what might lay beyond.

Plan a candlelit midnight encounter to experience the full power of its sepulchral charms.

Deliciously Macabre Stuff.

Highly Recommended.

I felt unsure about buying this CD but something in what I'd read about it made me to engage with the music. I am now profoundly grateful that I made that decision. The first part consists of some songs based on fragments from Schubert lieder. The songs are haunting and beautiful played and performed with great restraint. The second part of the CD consists of a long choral piece composed for a hospital chapel where the recently bereaved could sit in a contemplative environment. A beautiful idea setting a distinctive challenge to which this music responds with eloquent profundity. Overall a piece of creative work that touches the soul.

Originally came to this via David Lang's music for the film 'Great Beauty', and decided to buy it on the strength of the Amazon samples, and the outstanding reviews. Very glad I did so, as this is an impeccably performed & immaculately produced piece. Shara Worden's vocals drop like clear crystal, against a sparse instrumental accompaniment (guitar, piano, violin & drum), building a mesmerising emotional momentum.

The deliberate austerity of the approach (Worden avoids any overtly emotive tone), and the sparse use of instruments, serves to intensify the emotional weight of this unique album. The music moves slowly but inexorably, emphasising the insistent pulse of the melody, and the 'space between' the notes enhances the depth of the listener's experience. The final piece, 'Depart', features a quartet of voices, across a cello soundscape, and is impressively sustained for over 18 minutes. This is not music to be listened to as 'background', or with any competing distractions, in order to capture the grave power of this hypnotic performance. Given proper attention, Death's 'siren song', is utterly compelling.

The quality of the performance & recording also extends to the packaging. 'Death Speaks' comes in a classy black & white cardboard slipcase, illustrated with death's hand reaching out on the cover, and opens out into a gatefold sleeve, which has a b&w photo of an isolated house surrounded by skeletal trees, flanked by gold sleeves, containing the cd (suitably black), and an accompanying (charcoal) booklet giving the full text (largely culled from Schubert lieder).

Throughout, this is gravely beautiful, powerful & deeply moving music, which lingers long in the listener's heart & soul.

Lang is often partnered with Steve Reich on programmes, for no reason I can tell much more than they're part of the same crowd. So my relationship began with one of enduring him. Until one piece. I am now a convert to Lang (and Dessner) and follow him in his own right. I'm no musicologist so dare to place him, but I do find his music beguiling and I enjoy the disturbed peace that's occasionally punctured by cathedral sound. I realise that after 25 years of following Reich I actually now play Lang more often.

A gripping modern take on the romantic song cycle with its fascination on death.

Not so much enjoyable as compelling, and mesmeric.
