4.0 out of 5 stars Very strong program 15 Jan. 2013

This is a very strong engine which I use on a Kindle Fire. It has one or two annoying interface things which I don't seem to be able to change (such as large circles opening up when you touch on a square) - but overall, and considering the price, this is a really great program.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good if you're also good 28 Nov. 2014

Richard Lang is one of the very best chess programmers, especially on limited hardware. If you're my age, you may remember playing Cyrus on the ZX Spectrum, or Psion Chess on the PC/ST/Mac/QL, or one of the Mephisto dedicated machines. Those were his work and one of the PC versions of ChessGenius became the first program to beat Gary Kasparov at quickplay (25 minutes for all moves).

So it shouldn't come as a surprise that this plays very good chess. His programs have always specialised in playing very good moves quickly, rather than attempting to find the very best move in every position and getting into time trouble as a result.

Compared to Shredder, this doesn't look as good or start out assuming you're not a good player. It can play deliberately poor moves on a succession of "easy" levels, but doesn't make this as automatic as Shredder. It won't attempt to adapt to your level, for example. It's also not quite as nice looking.

But it displays what opening is being played, will gently point out your mistakes and, in a match where both are attempting to play their best, I'd have a bet on ChessGenius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Game 30 Dec. 2013

Glad to see this in the App Store. Use to play ChessGenius many years ago on my pocket PC (PDA) and then on my Android phone and now on my Kindle Fire! Game play levels are good from beginner to export. The layout and graphics are really good and not to cluttered. All in all very happy to have this again.
