Book Description

15 Feb 2009 Landscapes
8 car tours, 41 main walks plus many alterntive and shorter variations, 27 picnic suggestions Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and long a Mecca for culture freaks. The island also rewards the countryside lover with magnificent landscapes. Peter Amann knows the island intimately; he leads walking groups and works for the preservation of its national monuments. As an alternative to the stress of simply 'doing' all the sites, he invites you to savour the landscape at leisure. Thus there is enough material in this book for several holidays. The eight car tours (mostly circular and covering 2000km in all) follow little-used roads wherever possible and, while taking in all the major sights and sites, also visit landscapes well off the beaten track. Hints are given for places to stay en route. The walks a distillation of the best on the island are as varied in length and grade as the landscape itself; there are routes to suit all ages and abilities. Most of the walks are along old farming tracks, stone-laid mule trails and shepherds' paths.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sunflower Landscapes Sicily 6 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
I purchased this guide having previously used the excellent Sunflower series on walking holidays in Corsica, Picos de Europa and the Azores. The format is excellent: a pocket size book with small maps embedded in each walks' clear description, and a larger pull-out map at the back showing the location of the walk in a larger scale map. The guide also includes useful public transport information showing you how to get to the start. There are walks to suit all levels, from strolls to major day long hikes. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly indispensable guide book for walkers 28 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback
We used this guide book mainly to cover the western part of Sicily, the Mount Etna walks and the Aeolian islands.
In western Sicily we based ourselves in a farmhouse in Paceco (4km away from Trapani). This remote part of Sicily is now easily accessible by low coast flights (mainly Ryanair flights flying to Trapani airport). In this region we followed TOUR 5: PALERMO AND THE WEST and did all the walks from 24 to 29. Of particular interest is Zingaro Nature Reserve (walk 27). My only disappointment was that from the three islands of Egadi, only one island is covered namely the island of Levanzo. Isola di Marettimo is a trekkers paradise and could have been easily included.
Regarding the Mount Etna walks (walks 1 to 8) these are the most beautiful and very well described. These walks take the walker through varied climatic zones, each with its own distinctive vegetation.
Regarding the Aeolian islands this book only covers two out of the seven islands mainly Lipari and Vulcano, which is a pity since the other islands are worth exploring.
We hope to go again and make use of this guide book to explore other regions in Sicily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sunflower sicily 27 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
Another winner ! No holiday would be complete without one of these guides. In fact it has got to the point of seeing what destinations are covered by the various books in the series and planning our next trip accordingly. Very much more than just a walk book, but for this one you really do need access to a car. Sicily is a stunner scenically and not everyone is interested in ruins!

1.0 out of 5 stars Only for walkers
This is a very detailed book listing a number of walks. Completely useless as a general guide, perhaps I should have read the reviews more carefully.
