"The hallowed blue books. You'll be happy to have them for company."

Product Description

A guide to Samos, an island of increasing interest to British tourists. It is designed for walkers, botanists, or anyone who wants to get off the beaten track, and contains information about the local flora. There are 25 short walk or picnic suggestions, suitable for hot summer days or for those who have young children. This fourth edition is revised since the devastating forest fires of the year 2000. There are colour topographical walking maps and a fold-out touring map, showing the location of all the walks. Bus timetables are included.

We based our entire holiday on this excellent guide (Edition 4, ISBN 1-85691-187-X)...

Sunflower's guide contains enough information to ensure you make the most of every minute of your holiday. A bus timetable is provided, road maps, a detailed map for each walk, walks with picnic ideas - the book has been written for both walking and driving. Included is a selection of dedicated car tours, with shorter walk options (and picnics) from elite locations.

We only realised the true potential of this book when we arrived on the island. As we prefer not to use a hire car, the busses provided an extremely cheap and reliable means of reaching most of the walks contained in the guide. The authors have obviously given transport a lot of thought, including all bus stop information and timetables etc.

I am not a lover of walking guide books in general and find that in most books the instructions are often vague (it's OK - the author knows the walk!) and padded out with interesting facts that don't help you find your way! The additional information provided does not confuse the walking instructions and all the Sunflower books seem follow an extremely logical layout anyway.

I did find some of the instructions a little hurried, however, we did find our way and admit that without this guidebook we would have missed so much. Do not let this put you off - Samos is a delightful island and Brian and Eileen have presented a superb choice of walks, which otherwise you would simply not discover.

Samos is known as a kind of up-market package tour destination, but how many have realized that, except for Crete, Samos is the Greek island with the most walking opportunities? With this book in hand, and with a location in or near Samos Town, you can start to discover these possibilities, and also find the unknown gems that you otherwise are most likely to pass by.

The book is well written, has nice pictures, and the descriptions of the walks are clear with lots of detail. Bus tables and route informations are included, so you will be in no doubt how to get to/from your desired walking locations. It even has rather good maps, which are hard to come by. Road building is continuing to destroy old trails, which makes some of the descriptions and maps a little bit outdated, but at least I, for one, had no real difficulties in finding my way. Some keen walkers may have published some updated info about walking on Samos on the net. Another plus: The publisher also has an update service.

In addition the book has information about car tours and good picnic spots.

Lots of information, much of it right up to date. We found the timings of the walks very optimistic, perhaps they were surveyed in the winter, with no stops to admire the scenery[difficult]! In any sort of warmer weather add some time to have breaks for drinks etc.
