The problem is that only a small fraction of the paintings are shown as "how-to" projects. Many of the others are shown with captions like "Waterfalls offer the chance to show moving and still water in the same scene". Does the author then carry on to show the student how to create a waterfall, with a discussion of the techniques required to achieve the correct textures etc.? Sadly, no.
Unfortunately there are many examples of this kind of thing in the book. The author seems to assume that because HE finds certain things easy, then they require little or no explanation. As a teacher myself (I teach the guitar) I understand that things which are second nature to me can completely bamboozle the inexperienced student if not explained in microscopic detail. It's a shame that Mr. Hardy doesn't realise this as his book would have been immeasurably better as a result.
Buy this book if you have some experience of using pastels and want to pick up some tips, but a beginner (who this book is supposedly aimed at) will struggle to make much headway. Paul Hardy could probably write a very good beginners book on pastel painting, the problem is that as yet, he hasn't.
