Eat & Walk,
By
This review is from: Landscapes of Eastern Provence: Cıte D'azur and Alps (Paperback)
Sunflower also have their Walk & Eat Nice that would have done the same trick for me, "stuck" in Nice in a patch of bad weather. Well, "stuck" is hardly the word as there is such a plethora of superb eateries around. We are in Provence after all. BTW, they have also included their restaurant tips in this book. But as it was it became more "Eat & Walk" for me, concentrating on the easier, shorter walks. For that this book is also suitable. The walks are rather briefly explained, written for the experienced walker, and some investigation is needed before setting off. In the Esterel massif I think they are missing out a bit, leaving the best parts for an insanely long "Alternative" walk. Otherwise the book was good, at least as far as could be judged from a rather wet week based in Nice.

The Sunflower series as a whole are excellent guides and this one for Eastern Provence is no exception. We have holidayed in different areas within Eastern Provence 3 times now so have sampled a lot of the walks in this book. There should be something for everyone whatever their ability in this book because there are different grades of walks & usually a chance to shorten the walk if you choose. The easy walks are easily within reach of families (our kids have done most grades including the 'fairly strenuous' ones but then they are experienced walkers & we have no mercy!). Walks are easy to follow but I would still recommend that you buy the appropriate map. There are also picnic spot suggestions (if you prefer not to do much walking but still want to savour the countryside) and car tours that take you off the beaten track. You can obtain other walking books for the area once in France (the ones that come free from the tourist office in Mercantour National Park are particulary good & the paths there are really well marked) but they don't have english versions.
