Product Description

Product Description

A car-touring and walking guide to the region of eastern Crete. There are topographical walking maps and a fold-out touring map covering the whole of Crete, showing the location of all the walks in the book. Many short walks for motorists are suggested, along with recommendations of areas for picnics, and there are details of the popular excursion to the Samaria Gorge in western Crete. All the walks and tours have been revised for this second edition.

About the Author

Jonnie Godfrey worked on Crete for several years and, as a travel PR on her return to England, has taken many press groups to the island. Elizabeth Karslake, a photographer, joined Jonnie to undertake the huge job of mapping out, photographing and describing tours and walks over the whole island; together they produced the first walking guides for Crete.

5.0 out of 5 stars A different guide - highly recommended, 4 April 2009

Sunflower guides are different from other travel guides. As well as covering the popular walks and tourist excursions, you can depend on them for walking experiences outside the usual. This Landscape guide is no different and provides a reliable guide to walking through the solitary hillsides of Eastern Crete. The directions and maps are good, (although we occasionally still went wrong) and they provide helpful advice on the best picnic areas and places to take photographs. We are great fans of these guides and highly recommend them for walks and car tours.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for those based in Agios Nikolaos, 24 Mar 2009

This review is from: Landscapes of Eastern Crete (Sunflower Landscapes) (Paperback)
Eastern Crete covers a wide area from Heraklion, where most visitors land, to the far east around Sitia. The guide gives some very good car excursions with interesting commentaries. The walks are again well researched, but mainly based on departures from Agios Nikalaos. My wife and I stayed in Palekastro, and did walk 12, Zakros and the Valley of the Dead. The guide was accurate, though we underestimated the extreme heat concentrated in the gorge. Most other walks were outside our territory, but had we stayed at Agios Nikalaos I am sure we would have sampled many more. Crete is a large island, and could perhaps bear further subdivision for the purpose of walk descriptions. NB his review refers to the third edition, published in 1999. We have since purchased Sunflower Guides for the Azores and Samos.
