Beautiful walks- an essential guide,

It is essential to have a good guidebook if you are planning to explore the countryside in the Costa Blanca. This guide gets you to some really wonderful and obscure places in the mountains of the Alicante and Valencia provinces. Quite simply if you did not have it, you would spend hours just attempting to make any sort of circuit, and you would almost certainly miss the highlights of an area. With the inadequate Spanish military maps it is almost impossible to make your own walk unless you have an intimate knowledge of the area, as hardly any paths are featured on the maps. We have enjoyed over half the walks in the guide, as well as our variations on these routes. They can be done at anytime of the year, keeping the short walks for the heat of summer, as the long walks would leave you cooking under the sun for just too long.
There is an excellent fold out map to help you plan your walk and journey. If you can purchase the relevant 1:25,000 map then that can help if you get lost. But these maps are difficult to obtain in Spain. The 1:50,000 are the next best, but when it comes to the real detail they are lacking. So assuming you do not have the map of the area, it puts more importance on the diagrams in the guide which are a little lacking in detail, especially if you stray off the route and are looking for clues on how to correct yourself. One way around this, if you have the time, is to research the route on Google Earth (or the satellite images on Google Maps), and often you can see the track or path you intend to follow. If you print this out and mark on the route on an A4 sheet, or sheets, it can really help if you are in doubt. Also a compass really helps at such times. On the Sunflower web site there is an update page, which is worth reading, but it gets confusing when the writers of the comments can be referring to an older edition, and also the errors can become compounded. I hope the routes for this 4th edition have been revisited to clear up all these inaccuracies. I have not had the chance to check yet. It is worth mentioning that some of the paths, and even tracks, have become overgrown such that it can become a hack. So, long trousers and a little faith are advised and do not always expect a clearly defined way on. For existing users of the guide it would be great to have a selection of new walks, considering we are on the 4th edition. But for new users that is obviously not an issue and it is a great selection of walks. It is really surprising what history and stunning scenery can be found in the hills, and the fact that for most of the time you have the walk to yourself without seeing another soul. If you have ever tried going into the countryside and following the Spanish way-marked walks, it can be a nightmare, so this guide becomes an essential piece of kit, whether you live in Spain or whether you are on holiday.

There is something really special about the peaceful mountains that act as a backdrop to the busy Costa. Since we first discovered the area we have been back many times, always with our Sunflower Guide. It has a good variety of walks and as I get older I really appreciate some of the short walk alternatives. Walks around Guadalest are firm favourites and once again take you away from the busy tourist routes into peaceful and beautiful landscapes. One really good short walk is Walk 10. The main walk is long and strenuous and brilliant if you are really fit, but the Mozarabic Trail is the best bit and that's not difficult at all. Plus the story of Isbert's Folly is a good one and the whole place has a really interesting atmosphere. There are lots of little gems like this and I can't imagine how you would find them all without a detailed guide book. The local tourist offices do have walking guides but they rarely mention the ones this guide covers and they are some of the best.
I find the walk gradings and the times a good guide to what to expect and the maps are a real bonus. We have also used the picnic sites information and they are generally good. Have not really made use of the car tours section, except to reach walks but even that limited use provides insights we would not otherwise have. This is an excellent book for walkers and anyone who wants to discover the landscapes and villages that were there long before the brash coastal developments.
