Book Description

9 May 2012 From Snapshots to Great Shots
Now that you’ve bought that amazing new DSLR, you need a book that goes beyond the camera manual to capture stunning images. For photographers interested in landscape photography, this guide will help you conquer the fundamentals and take amazing outdoor shots.

Pro photographer Rob Sheppard starts with the basics–composition, light, and perspective–and describes how to connect with your scene. He covers all the key camera features that affect your image, including how changing focal lengths alters your perspective and the aperture’s direct correlation with depth of field. Once you’ve captured those shots, Rob takes you through simple post-processing steps in Lightroom, Photoshop, and Photoshop Elements.

This guide is for beginning-to-intermediate digital photographers to understand the basics and bring their own unique artistic expression to landscapes and outdoor shooting. Beautifully illustrated with large and compelling photos, this book teaches you how to take control of your photography to get the image you want every time you pick up the camera.

This is one of a growing series from Peachpit Press, most often associated with computing books but, as with many other non-specialist publishers, has begun to commission photographic titles. All the titles are fresh, either published in 2011 or 2012 and are new titles rather than reprints of older ones. Consequently, data relating to equipment will be reasonably current although that cannot always be guaranteed. Camera and lens model life tends to be years rather than months (as with computers), so this should not be a major issue.

Much of the series, which all include 'from Snapshots to Great Shots' as part of their title, is in the form of third-party camera guides which are to date mostly for various Nikon and Canon models (using their US model names where they differ from European). Others, such as this, are thematic and others cover Black and White, weddings and other subjects as well as one relating to the use of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, which may be used to process RAW images.

All the titles are aimed at the intermediate level and below so should suit the photographer moving from a compact or bridge camera to a dSLR or mirror-free system compact (often now referred to in the US as 'EVIL' - Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens cameras) as well as those who may have owned one for a time and wish to advance beyond the basics. There may also be something for the more advanced. All the titles seen appear to be well-written by knowledgeable authors and are well illustrated, with captures of camera screens where relevant and informative.

At the price, this is extremely good value and is definitely worthy of consideration for those wishing to adventure into landscape photography. There is good advice to be had including choice and use of a tripod, lens choice as well as the subject related advice about viewpoints, and framing etc which will be useful more for the less experienced.

5.0 out of 5 stars Landscape Photography that everyone can understand 29 April 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a great book. It is written by an expert landscape photographer (Rob Sheppard was the editor of Outdoor Photographer magazine for 12 years) in straightforward no-nonsense language. In addition to chapters on topics such as Seeing as Your Camera Sees and Connecting With a Landscape, each chapter contains a couple of assignments that you can undertake to understand the chapter and improve your photography.

I have several "Landscape Photography" books including tose by well known experts in the field, but this is the best one I have read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Landscape Primer 1 Oct 2012
By Brev00 - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I try to read all of Rob Sheppard's books. I find him to be a very approachable author. By that, I mean he does not make me feel like I have to spend thousands of dollars to get a decent picture. One of the best parts of this book is the description of his gear. While I often read books and blogs where the author recommends I spend a mint, Rob Sheppard's gear is so humble it really makes photography seem more a product of the photographer than his wallet. He also knows what he is talking about in terms of getting good landscape photographs. This is the first book I have read in this 'Snapshot to Great Shot' series and I am sure I will read a few more. The wildlife and exposure editions seem like they will be interesting to me. I like the format with an image or two closely analyzed as an example of each topic. So, I recommend this book highly and, if you like it, find and read more of Rob Sheppard's work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book! 16 Aug 2012

I took a number of classes at Hennepin Technical Institute from Rob Sheppard when he was in Minnesota and loved his instructional method. This book furthers his wonderful instructional ability, being easy to understand and relate to in my own world. It is a refresher and new learning experience. Love the 'assignments' at the end of each chapter. Great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful info 11 Dec 2012
By Michael Harris - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
No matter the experience level, there's always something you can learn, and that's true here too. Straightforward, brief, but good insights, the illustrations are captioned with settings info and his discussion of white balance and HDR are important for anyone who is either uncomfortable, or unfamiliar with, either subject. Not a pro level guide certainly, but useful information for those who want to improve their landscape photography.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great resource - the base of my growing library. 23 Mar 2013

I'm re-reading this book again. Its both a refresher and a reference. It presents the material in non-techie language. The examples are real-world with lots of tips of what to look for and how to deal with what you find - all in simple to understand descriptions. This is one of only a few books that I"m very happy I purchased. Its one of my PRIMARY guides as I hopefully continue to improve my photography hobby! (I have already recommended this book to several others.)
