Product Description

Product Description

Landscape is a theme being explored more and more in contemporary quiltmaking. Recent exhibitions have showcased breathtaking quilts depicting subjects such as undulating patterns of a furrowed field, the sun setting over a distant horizon, or rolling hills as far as the eye can see, rendered in varying degrees of abstraction. This beautifully illustrated book is a guide to creating landscape-themed quilts, from the earliest source of inspiration to the finished article. It is useful for quiltmakers of all abilities: beginners can progress through clear and simple instructions, while more accomplished quiltmakers will find stimulation in the glorious photographs of quilts from the world's most outstanding textile artists. Practical exercises scattered throughout the book help the reader to channel their creativity, and the author encourages the reader to keep detailed records in sketchbook form. The book covers: * Photographs as Inspiration: how to develop visual ideas from a simple starting point * Colour and Cloth: choosing the type of materials best suited to the subject, including a section on colour theory * Texture and Stitch: explores how different types of stitch can be harnessed to create texture and depth * Design: outlines the rules of design and when they can be broken * Quilt Assembly: practical information on progressing to the finished piece.

I bought this book for my mother in law and now want a copy for myself! It's pages are filled with lush photographs of brightly coloured and very contemporary quilts. The approach is creative and process oriented - the author even suggests keeping a sketchbook of landscape ideas and walks the reader through the process of dying your own fabric. Very, very inspiring and clearly written by a person who is passionate and successful in this type of quilting/textile artwork. Just flicking through the pages and seeing the illustrations will be enough to know that you've made a great choice with this book!

If you have never sewn before, this book might be a little over your head. It will be okay, still very inspiring, but to get into it as a beginner you will need to be a bit experimental and daring. This book is ideal for someone who has had at least some experience with sewing, loves colour, and wants some inspiration about what to do next. It is equally exiting for the more experienced (I have had atleast 10 years experience and found this book to be very exiting indeed!)

Fabulous Book! 26 Jun 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've just bought several books on textile art and art quilts, and this one is outstanding in many ways. It's very clearly written, containing lots of really useful little tips, with full instructions for a number of interesting projects; many, many beautiful and inspiring examples of both the author's work and that of other textile artists, and suprisingly the best guide to sketchbooking for textile artists that I've found so far - I hadn't expected that bonus! Also very simple instructions on dyeing fabric - the best I've read so far. Also answered my questions involving the use of synthetic sheers in quilting, rather than the more usual silk organza. A great book!
