Format: Hardcover
It's hard to know what to say about this book, from its story that takes your breath away, to its wonderfully quirky characters. And then there is the luscious poetry of Baricco's writing, with its infinite patience and unique pacing. The fact that this has been translated is itself amazing -- it's hard to imagine how much more heart-breaking this must read in Italian (and translator McEwen deserves huge praise).

While the story weaves together romance and tragedy and at least one painfully beautiful woman, it is a man's story, full of tinkering, inventor-types on the cusp of the Industrial Revolution when everything seems entirely possible. It's a story of odd people wrapped up in oddly extraordinary acts, and it is gracefully and exquisitely told.

A Master of Writing 4 July 2014
By Kate G. - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
He is the Faulkner of our time. This book, I believe, is his first? Not his most masterful, but still stunning. And for folks who like to watch the evolution of a writer, you can see him chiseling out his craft here, then refining it in Silk.
