Review

'I know of no publishing house which has ever offered to reimburse a buyer who remains dissatisfied after reading one of its books. I think Darton, Longman and Todd could safely make the first such offer with Landmarks. I delighted in following Margaret Silf's journey of exploration today ... lucidly written, down to earth, free of jargon, full of hope and encouragement.' -- Gerard W. Hughes 'Margaret Silf is one of the most talented spiritual writers, and her Landmarks will become a classic.' -- Margaret Hebblethwaite

Margaret Silf helps the reader to understand where he is on his journey towards God. She helps us to recognise the positive and negative forces which are at work in our daily life, and how we can deal with them. The reader emerges as a more mature person, who really understands his Self with all its moods, desires and distractions. The book is accessible, yet not simplistic. There are plenty of spiritual exercises at the end of each chapter, which enable the reader to personalise the " landmarks ".
I have enjoyed it tremendously and will keep dipping into it.

This book can certainly be described as challenging - you really need to stop and think about what Margaret Silf is saying. It is a book to take you time over and not to rush. The various exercises map you life to various landmarks like a stream from its beginning until it joins the sea. The illustrations make it easier to follow the various exercises and thoughts. I found the best time to read it was when I had half an hour to spend rather than a rushed 10 minutes - you will notice the difference! Overall this book opens up parts of you that you never knew existed.

Margaret Silf's most gifted use of anecdote and imagery must make Landmarks one of the most accessible books in recent times on the Ignatian way for anyone truly searching or wishing to deepen in their spiritual relationship.
As ever, Margaret's style smacks of authenticity and of her genuine gift to both discern and guide imaginatively. A beautiful book in all senses. Thank you for such a gift.

Margaret opens up the world of Ignatian spirituality in such a way that it becomes very much more accessible to the layman. Her grasp of seeing God in the ordinary events of our lives and her ability to offer up methods for the reader to do the same is remarkable, as is her use of imagery, for those of us for whom a picture or a diagram is worth a thousand words. I found the book excellent in its coverage of discernment and identification of 'consolation' and 'desolation'. The portrayal of the thought patterns that we all engage in, and her use of the 'inner compass' remain in my mind even several years after reading the book. Christian people reading this book carefully cannot (or at least should not) fail to benefit. Interpreted and applied honestly at a personal level, it cannot fail to help you along your spiritual path.

This book is about God in the whole of life. It is rooted in the tradition of Igatian spirituality. It is gentle and gives beautiful stories and suggestions for drawing closer to God. It touches deeply where few books do. If you are not the sort of person to cope well with daily bible notes, or you have had a long history of an intellectual look at the bible, but this has left you well informed but dry, then I suggest you try this. Give it space. Give it time. Read it slowly. Pick it up. Put it down. You will draw new things from it over and over again. It gently guides you through the big things in life. It is perfect to do with a friend, alone or in a group within any denomination or none. I have found it goes well with her book on prayer 'Taste and see'.
